Can pistol primers be used instead of small rifle primers?

G'day,

I have hundreds of CCI pistols primers given to me by a friend.

Can they be used to reload 204 loads?

Cheers,

Matt

No. The cup is too thin.

Thanks.

Thought as much. Pistols are loaded at much lower pressures, but I was hoping to use up the primers somehow.

If you reload for the .22 Hornet, pistol primers can actually come in quite handy.

I use winchester small pistol primers in my 22 hornet and it works great ! Better accuracy than useing small rifle primers. My little Ruger 77/22 gives me 1/2" groups with the 40 gr Hornady V-max, 11.3 gr of IMR 4227, Win brass, and Small Win pistol primers. It'll smack a coyote dead out to 130 yrds or so. But I would'nt try that type of primer with any cartridge much hotter than say a 218 bee or so.

I'm under the belief that there's a difference between rifle & pistol primers regarding the height of the primer.

Look on the Home page and on the left side there is a place you can bring up GOOD PRIMER INFO. It does not have anything on pistol primers but it does on small rifle primers. I think the thing of most concern for the .204 is the thickness of the cup and I think I read somewhere that pistol primers have a thin cup which would not be good for the .204.

I saw that and I've seen one similar on a site called New Jersey highpower. Anyway, it was dimension/measurement "C" I was curious about.
