I bought some 39gr bk and I was curious on which powder would everyone suggest? I was thinking about either varget, h4895 or imr4895. I would like smething that if I don't like the 39gr bullets or that particular powder i could maybe use it in my 223 or 270wsm. I have some 10X sitting around but don't really like it. It is kinda dirty. but I think it might be an option. I know up in the favorite loads section h4895 seems to be the powder of choice but would like to see what others think about my other choices especially varget.
i will be used for a cz varmint if that makes a difference.
thanks
kyle

Kyle--My favorite powder for the 39 gr. Sierra BK in my Savage 12VLP is H4895. H4895 is my favorite powder for the 32 gr. V-Max, the 35 gr. FBHP Berger and it will be my go-to powder for the 40 gr. Nosler BT when I run out of AA2520.
I think you should be able to get Varget to work with the 39 gr. Sierra, but you won't get as good a muzzle velocity with Varget as you can with H4895--close though. I use Varget in my 22-250 and have used it with some of the bullets I shoot in my Lilja barreled .17 Remington, especially the 20 gr. V-Max.
H4895 is also a powder I use with a couple bullets for my .17 Remingtons as well. The 25 gr. Hornady HP, 25 gr. V-Max, the 25 gr. C.E. Nagel and the 27.8 gr. Hammett BTHP all work well with H4895 in both my .17 Remingtons.
I don't own a .223 or .270, so I couldn't tell you if H4895 would be the ticket for either one of those.

I would give the nod to H-4895 in your 204 also for the same velocity reasons Silverfox gave. H-4895 is not a very good choice for your 270wsm though. Works great in 223 by all accounts.
Varget will work in all three. I'm one of those few who never had luck with Varget in my guns though. I'm in the minority on that though.
Try the 10X. Yep burns dirty. Might clean up a little if you get it shootin in an efficient top node. I've never really given it a fair shake. I did just recently learn my Savage slave barrel will shoot all the 40gn bullets into .5 moa using 25.2 gns of 10X. A load found right here under favorite loads. I was pretty surprised by that and that tube earned a little overdue respect. Might have been a fluke.

I agree with Silverfox on the h4895. I have used it for 32, 35, and 39 gr. bullets with great results. I sure is nice to use just one powder.

I have a CZ varmint .204 that realy likes Re 10X with the 39's. Sub 1/4 moa from a bench at 100 yards.
the load is,
Rem. brass
Win. wsr
25.0 gr. Re 10X
39gr Bk
vel. 3760's
best group was .163 for five at 100, but most are sub .250 if I don't yank one.
I would start about 23.5 and work up slowly as there have been some faster lots of 10X.

Ya' know. I keep seeing members trying that same load of ~25.1 gr. of RE-10X with 39 and 40 gr. bullets. It just seems to work so well in a lot of rifles. It sure works for my son's XR-100. H4895 is also an excellent choice. Forget the Varget and try some Benchmark.

The only bullet I've found to be a good fit (in my guns) with the Varget is Hornady's 45gr SP.......

Kyle, I have found excellent results with the 39gr SBKs using Win-748 with CCI 450 primers. I can use the same powder charge in both rifles.
This combination works well in both of my .204s and in my AR produces some .22" groups.
I like the powder as it also give me great results in my .223s as well.
I've tried the H4895, IMR3031, Varget, RL-15, and Ramshot X-terminator.. Most of them give good results in my .204s, but are not as compatible with my other rifles.
Just my 2 cent experience..

Well, I guess my Rugers just want to be different.
I've tried everything out there and both of mine shoot better with Benchmark when loading 39 SBKs.
