Check their load data center. You will find they provide the Win 748 load data for all cartridges...as they bought the rights to Winchester powder.

I'm pretty sure Hodgen does not include 748 data for the 204.

Go back to the 204 Load Data on top of page and click on Hornady. You can use the 748 data for the 40 V-max with the 39bk.

27 grains of W748 works for me @ 3300 fps. Start at 26 grains and work up. I have used 27.5 and no pressure signs, but group was opening up.

You might want to go higher than that and find the top node. 748 will start to burn cleaner (not clean but cleaner) when you push it hard.
All depends on what your barrel wants. I've seen some super accurate nodes up top and I've seen some 223 and 204 tubes that could not hack it for extended shooting.

josebd2006-- I found some load data for WW748 at the Hornady Reloading Data site.

32 gr. V-Max Start at 26.4 gr. for 3,600 fps
32 gr. V-Max Max load 29.6 gr. for 4,100 fps

40 gr. V-Max Start at 26.0 gr. for 3,400 fps
40 gr. V-Max Max load 28.3 gr. for 3,850 fps

Back on June 28, 2004, I tried a couple of limited modified ladder tests with both the 32 gr. Hornady V-Max and the 40 gr. V-Max at 100 yards. I was using once-fired Hornady brass and Rem 7½ primers. At that time I was using the Hornady New Dimension FL sizing die and the Hornady seating die.

For the 32 gr. bullet I used loads of 29.0, 29.3, 29.6 and 29.9 gr. Velocities with those loads were 3,763, 3,902, 3,920, and 4,036 fps respectively

For the 40 gr. bullet I used loads of 27.5, 28.0, 28.2, 28.4, and 28.6 gr. Velocities for those loads were 3,690, 3,792, 3,790, 3,790, and 3,842 fps, respectively. There were no excessive pressure signs with any of these loads, but at the time I was thinking I might have hit a pressure spike area when the load of 28.2 gr. gave me 2 fps less than the 28.0 gr. load. To top that off, the load of 28.4 gr. gave me the same velocity of 3,790 fps as the 28.2 gr. load. Common sense was not prevailing and I fired off the load of 28.6 gr. with no harm to anyone or anything and the velocity went up to 3,842 fps.

I was young and foolish back there in 2004 and was searching for a load that would give me at least 4,225 fps like Hornady advertised for their 32 gr. factory loads. So, on August 12, 2004, I loaded up another bunch of casings for another modified ladder test. Using the 32 gr. V-Max again, I loaded up one casing each of: 30.0, 30.5, 31.0, and 31.5 gr. of WW748. Velocities with these loads were 4,250 fps, 4,315 fps, 4,397 fps, and 4,400 fps, respectively!!! YES, those are not typos on those velocities Shots 1, 3 & 4 formed a nice cloverleaf group that measured 0.195" center-to-center. With shot #2 in the mix, the 4-shot group measured 0.670".



I took the casings down to my reloading room and decapped them. I attempted to seat primers in the pockets with my fingers. I could push the primers in with my thumb and seat them to the bottom of the primer pocket. If I tapped the base of the casing on my reloading bench, the primers would start to drop out!! CAN YOU SAY STRETCHED CASE HEAD????

My GO-TO powder for my Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger is H4895. I have worked up extremely accurate loads for the 32 gr. V-Max, 35 gr. FB HP Berger, 39 gr. Sierra, 40 gr. Nosler BT. I have some decent loads for the 40 gr. V-Max, and 40 gr. Berger LTB, but nothing to brag about.

Just to clarify I meant try going higher than 27.0 gns.
Don't even consider climbing into the 30's with the 39bk. Something will break.
