I found a load today, but it's awful slow.

Over the weekend I tinkerd with some different powders I have. I just started loading the 204 so I don't have a lot of stuff that will work. The only bullets I have are 32gr. v-max. I really want to go to the 39gr. Sierra. Anyway, the combo I found to work is 28.5 gr of Varget w/ the 32V-Max. I'm guessing velocity is around 3600, but it shot .236. I liked that alot. I mmay go out this week and buy some H4895. See if I can get out of 3rd gear.

3800 is slow now?
Hey I'm no expert but I'd take .236 at 3800 over .50 at 4000.
Just my .02

Va-- Is your guesstimation on 3600fps from a load book on the 204??
If I remember correctly those should be closer to the 3900 mark. But all rifles vary. I like the H4895 with the 39gr BK's too. Thats a nice small group too.

With the Varget loaded, the Hogden web site said that 29gr.was just over 3700fps. So I guestimated at around 3600 for my load.

Thanks for the test. I'm glad to see it's not as slow as I thought. I guess after I get my 2nd 204, I am going to have to invest in a chroney.

I would take the accuracy any day over the speed. And like Deej said that pdog well never know the difference. But that is up to you what you want to try. Good luck and be safe ok.

Va varminter--My Savage 12VLP with the 26" barrel was getting 3,915 fps with 28.5 gr. of Varget and 3,949 fps with 29.0 gr. of Varget. I did tempt fate and shot some test rounds with 29.5 gr. of Varget and got 3,988 fps and with 29.8 gr. the Chrony reading was 4,030 fps. All readings were taken at 12 feet from the muzzle. The load of 29.8 gr. of Varget was a compressed load.
I don't know for sure, but in my mind, Varget might be a wee bit to slow burning for those 32 gr. bullets??? I get better accuracy and velocity with H4895.
I agree on the accuracy over velocity though. It doesn't matter how fast your bullet is going if you can't hit what you are aiming at.
