204 Ruger and 338 Lapua – The Sublime to the Ridiculous

My son and his buddy belong to a 1000 yard range in Pennsylvania. The buddy just got a Savage 110 in 338 Lapua Magnum just to one up my son's 300 WSM and I got nominated for reloading duties. Putting the 338 round next to the 204 is almost comical. The Lapua looks like an artillery shell. Frankly I feel a little foolish reloading something that is so over the top. Let the kids have their cannons, I'll stick with my tack driving 204. I'll take precision over brute force any day.

One good thing about aging, a guy just does not feel like he has to "prove" much!

Well said. I did my proving in the ring, and if the young bucks make fun on my little 204 compared to their cannons I remind them of that. That usually shuts them up pretty quick.

my buddy bought Weatherby .338 LM just becuase it's bigger then his two .338 Win Mags and he can afford to shoot it. It did quite a job on a 16 lb bowling ball! :) He still enjoys shooting my .204 and 20 VT. You don't want to be near the bench when that LM is being fired...

I have to roger you on that one. In fact I have a few highpower rifles and pistols I don't shoot any more.

Retumbo is what I've been using with 280gr Sierras. We took it to a 1000 yard range in Pa yesterday along with my son's 300 WSM and spent the afternoon wacking clay pigeons at 1000 yards. We had to be quick setting up the pigeons as someone had seen a black bear there earlier in the morning. My son was almost hoping a bear would show so he could radio his buddy on the firing line "Will there is a bear 10 feet from me. Take it."
