Sources for new 204 cases

Post by Travelor »

Just got a Cooper 204 Ruger and am loving it! Found IMR 8208 XBR and this gun are a happy marriage.

But can't seem to find any new cases other than Nosler. Anyone have a source.

All I can suggest is to get on the net and do some research for a source. I got caught short in the first shortage on reloading components. That ain't happening to me anymore! :wall: At this time I am well stocked on every thing I need, probably for the rest of my life. If my house goes up in flames, I will be haulin butt to the next county!

Good luck, Winchester and Remington has not made 204 brass in several months. It is not one of the top sellers so they have not been making them since they cannot keep up with demand. However Winchester has been putting out more brass and we have been getting different calibers in stock at the store I work at. I believe Midway has the 204 Winchester brass as overdue. You may have to buy loaded ammo to keep you going for reloads. I started annealing brass to keep my current inventory in the action. You may want to look for Hornady brass but it is not one of my favorite brass.

When I got my rifle, I bit the bullet and just bought 350 rounds of Hornady cartridges at just under $1 each. I know that a lot of people don't like Hornady, but once they're filled with 39 SBKs and RE-10x, they do terrific for me. 1/2-MOA or less at 100 yards, and I just shot a sub-3" group at 500 yards with them. They were a hair short from the factory, and I only neck size, so I haven't even trimmed them. The flash holes were all nicely concentric and terrifically even and burr-free, so I haven't touched those, either.

I picked 300 rounds of Winchester brass in the last 10 days from Bass Pro Shops "online order". :D
Other than that I have been buying Hornady brass.

I just got in 500 Norma 204 Thursday from Midway at a reasonable price. Hope this helps. They, Norma, are the best for my AR 204. JD Southeast Texas

Do you know if you can get all of it with the same LOT # when that much is ordered? Just curious. Also, have you measured the neck thickness yet, I'm just curious how they compare to Remington 221 FB brass.

That Midsouth Shooter's Supply price seems fairly decent and with shipping comes out to about $64/100 casings. If those who go in on the group buy don't live fairly close together, you'd have to factor in some additional shipping to get the casings to the buyers. I purchased 300 of the .204 Ruger Norma casings from Custom Reloading Tools back in February of 2012 and they cost $64/100, shipping included.

The Norma brass is very uniform in weight and neck wall thickness. I had previously purchased a bunch of .204 Ruger brass from Nosler in both the blems and their firsts. The firsts are a bit pricier than Norma's brass. The Nosler brass is good stuff too. I purchased a RB/LP Savage target action and had a SS #6 contour Lilja three groove barrel with a 1 in 12 twist chambered with a .231" neck installed on it. I turned the neck walls on the Nosler brass to .0111" in thickness and the rifle shoots itty bitty groups with 32 gr. Hornady V-Max, 39 gr. Sierra BlitzKings and the 40 gr. Hornady V-Max bullets. I haven't worked up any of the Norma brass yet, so I can't comment on how it works in my rifle.

Jim White--The neck wall thickness on the Norma brass I purchased measured from .0115" to .0119".

Cabelas has Winchester also. 29$ per 100

I only use Norma for the 204, I just got another 500 a few months back or I would consider the 2,000 just for me.

I do travel from Bend, Or. to Fresno, Ca. a few times a year. If anyone along the I-5 route wanted to meet for a split I would buy the whole box and we could work it out later?

I can always use 500 Norma quality pieces. ( the orchards in the Central Valley are LOADED with squirrels) all year.

ClaimJumper, thanks for the line on Powder River as I was not aware of it. I have not seen the larger packages of brass for sale, such as the Winchester. I will definitely get some when in stock again. Thanks! :jive: :jive: :salute:
