Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
I see a lot of posts for folks using the 39 Grain Blitz King. I also see a lot saying they can't get it to group. What I don't see is much reference to twist rates on the rifles that DO shoot well.
I am thinking of trying it on the DPMS upper which is a 1:12. Sounds a bit slow for the 39 but there are exceptions and there is also the thought that length and diameter are the deciding factors not so much the weight. .
Would a few of you indicate rifle twist rates for those that are trying to shoot the 39 BK? Both good and bad groupings please.
Thanks

Re: Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
My 12-twist Savage shot them alright. My barrel was really particular. SOME 40gr it would shoot, some not.
I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.
Re: Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
I had better change of hitting paper by throwing the 40GN V-max bullet than shooting it. But the 39GN SBK is quickly proving itself to be extremely accurate in my 1:12 700. It has also taken a bit of testing to get to that point.
Re: Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
I cannot get the 39gr SBK to shoot well out of my Tikka T3 1:12" but it will shoot the 32gr SBK 1/2 MOA easily when I'm on . . . go figure.

Im shooting 1/2 MOA with 40gr V-max and 1/2 MOA with 32gr SBK. Im using a 1:9 Twist? Dont have 39Gr SBK to tryout.
Hodgdon must be using a 24" 1:9 for their online reloading data as my chrono number match + or - 5fps.

Have you tried the 50 -55's int the 1/9 twist? Get them loaded and give them a try !

Re: Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
My two .204s are/were 1:12 and I guess I'm blessed, 39 SBKs and 40 Bergers shoot very well (0.5" easy, better when I'm shooting well) for me,

One Savage Model 12 and one Cooper Model 21, both 1:12. Both love the 39SBK's w/ RL10X, Federal 205M's and WW brass.

Re: Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
The 39gr SBK should shoot well in most any 12 twist 204R. Three of my 204's are 12 twist (Cooper/Kimber/Sako) and they all shoot that bullet into .3" or less on a good day. My 11 twist Pac-Nor/M700 shoots it into .25" regularly, sometimes better.Promapper wrote:I see a lot of posts for folks using the 39 Grain Blitz King. Here's a ten-shot group from my Cooper MTV in 204R using the 39gr SBK....no record setting performance, but shows the consistency of the bullet in a 12 twist barrel in the field with some switchy winds that day. This was not shot at a range, but in an alfalfa field from my field bench.
If your 12 twist rifle won't shoot this bullet well, I'd be looking at fixing whatever the problem is, as every 204R I'm aware of shoots it quite well indeed. Bedding, crown, seating depth, neck tension......lots of things to consider, but your rifle should shoot this bullet well.
Sidebar: For the record, the only 204R rifle I own that will shoot the 40gr V-Max is my 11 twist M700.....this sure tells me something.
My 12 twist 204's display what could be referred to as "patterns" when shooting this bullet, NOT groups.
Re: Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
My CZ shoots em great and its a 1 in 12. Also shot the 40gr Bergers pretty good as well with the nod going to the sierras.

Re: Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
All good info, looks like the 1:12 is deffinately do-able. I will try them out this weekend.

Re: Barrel twist for 39 gr Blitz King
My Savage 12 FV-S is a 1:12 and loves 39 SBK,s with RL 10X, Remmy 700 still working on it, so far I know what it dosnt like, So a little more thinking on it and measured it twist its between 1:12.75" to 1:13". So far only 32 vmaxs pushed really hard come close. Work in progress.
