Starting out with a 204

Post by Ol` Joe »

Just before Christmas I found a nib, or like new if it isn`t, Remington XR-100 in 204 Ruger on the used gun rack at my local shop . There were absolutely no marks or sign of use on it anywhere and the mount holes in the receiver still had the plugs in them. I have had no experience with the cartridge and to be honest don`t even know anyone that owns one. I bit, laid down my shekels, and took it home. There were absoultly no marks or sign of use on it anywhere and the mount holes in the receiver still had the plugs in them. I mounted a Nikon Buckmaster in 6X18 on it that Mrs Ol` Joe gave me for Christmas, and I have finally got around to paying with it a bit.

It seems a bit tempermental about bullet used but, I think it is going to be a great little shooter. My 1st attempt at loading for it was with the Berger 35gr which ran about .75” avg for me with Benchmark. I knew the rifle should do better and that others reported great success on-line with the Sierra 39gr so I hunted down a box. With the COL set at 2.40” loaded a few using H4895 in Winchester cases and found it really seems to like this combination no matter what the charge wt. I was a bit leery about the lower charges due to the rifles 1/12" twist but velocity seems to be enough to keep them pointed straight even at lower charge weigths. These are all at 100 yds

Yesterday I got back out and with the 39gr over 26gr of H4895 tried playing with the COL in 0.010” increments and it seems that 2.390” is where the rifle wants it set.
Here is 3rds at 200 meters with this final load. I think I`m going stop here and just enjoy what I`ve got :-D

I have two that are similar, VLTHSS in 204. I bedded and free-floted both and re-crowned one. Both shoot very well with 39 SBK's.

Enjoy,

I haven`t messed with the trigger any lately. I have it down around 2lbs but it still feels a bit gritty and I`ll likely change it in the near future if it doesn`t polish up with a little more use.
