RCBS vs. Hornady chamber tools

Post by Hedge »

Just thought you guys would be interested in something I've discovered.

We all know that the Savage .204 throats are long. I have 2 tools that I've used to find the the distance to the lands.

Using the RCBS tool, I was getting pretty consistent results. But when I used the Hornady tool, I was getting dramatically different measurements. After some head scratching, I found a glaring problem. The RCBS tool spud doesn't reach the lands in spite of getting what feels like a good, solid seat.

Here's a pic of the difference when used in my chamber:

What is happening is that the shoulder portion of the RCBS tool is what is stopping forward movement. It's just measuring the distance to the shoulder datum.

You're welcome, GaCop

I like the RCBS tool because it has the potential to make it easier to measure when the bullet won't stay in the neck.

I think I'm going to turn my own spud and see how that works.
