Redding Bushing Size Survey

Post by FireBallGuy »

Got my repaired type S match die back from redding yesterday and we are good to go. Sized up a bunch of brass and tried seating some bullets. It would appear now that there is more tension being exerted on the bullet than before but I feel that maybe dropping a size might be in order. Using the .225" bushing now and was thinking the .224" might be in the cards. Just curious what you guys are using out there and what should really be the correct neck tension for this caliber. Thank you all for your thoughts.

I'm using a .224" bushing for my WW cases, but don't forget, different cases may require different bushing sizes, depending on what neck tension you're after, or how thick the necks are in your particular lot of brass. Nothing tangible can be realized from the bushing sizes others are using unless you're just curious......

I've found that a bit of extra neck tension usually improves ballstic performance and prevents early bullet movement from primer flame. JMO

In rick I trust! I had the same thoughts. Enough tension so as not to shave the bullets but a tight fit is the objective. Thanks rick, going to get the .224" unit.

FireBallGuy.............I have to question you on this one! If your neck is tight with a .225 bushing? Why go with a .224? and not a.226 Sorry if missing something?
Later and let us know what you find out.
Like Rick said bushing size variable, depending on the make of brass you like to shoot, weather or not you turn necks.
Hope this helps a little.

Sorry guys, what i meant to say was the tension IMPROVED a bit with the .225" but I think a little more is in order. I do not turn necks on my brass. The cases in question were hornady and remington. Have tey to run any winnies through the die. That is why I paln on having several more so that can change according to the brass in rotation. Hope that makes sense.

I have been using .226 with Winchester brass. It takes 18 lbs to push the bullet into the case. After reading what RIO said I might try the .225.

Fireball above is link that was posted earlier about bushing sizes for the 204 Ruger. I think you should be in the ball park with .224, .225 and .226 sizes.
Hope this helps.

I was really just curious what you guys are using in general. I got the .225" and .226" when I got the dies, should have ordered a .224" as well. All bases should be covered then.

Kim: I'd use a .226" bushing in those cases. That will give you a .002" press fit. The Sinclair book talks in length about this very subject. Some guys swear by at least .003" press fit for complete combustion and better accuracy, but you just need to try different combo's with your pet load to see which works best in your rifle. HTH
