IMR 8208

Post by kjw204 »

Anyone worked up a load for this powder yet? I picked up a pound of it, would like to try it behind the 35gr bergers. Found my 32gr Vmax's are detonating on coyotes, will save them for smaller game.

Tried it yesterday in my xr100, and it showed no signs of even trying to group. I was disappointed, after all I had read about it, I thought it was going to be awesome, but every load I tried was not promising in any way. From starting load to max and beyond with many points in between, it just scattered bullets. With the right loads, the gun will shoot in the .2s all day long, and in the .1s when everything goes well. Conditions were on the miserable side, with an inconsistent switchy wind, but even with that, we still managed to shoot some .2s with the loads that the gun likes(not 8208). My dad has been working with it, in his Hart barreled custom, and it shows a little promise, but not much.

Thanks for your result. I'd thought of trying it, but will now stick with 10X.

My boss at work tried two different lots in his 6PPC benchrest rig yesterday, and with both lots, using equal charges, the loads chrono-ed within 5FPS of each other. He mentioned that it seemed to work best when pressures were "up there", so maybe a little more work is indicated. I haven't seen any for sale, but I'm overstocked on powder anyway, so it'll be a long time before I buy any.

Glenn

I agree with your boss. My ppc shot horrible until I got "up there". Nice big node at the top.
any load between 3420 and 3480 fps makes dots with 68 Barts Ultras.

I tried some 8208 in 204 with 32bk's. My barrel sure did'nt like it. Does'nt mean much cuz so far this new tube hates everything.
As a last gasp hail Mary shot I'm gonna reach way back into the powder bin and try some ol dusty 10X.
I've seen great potential with 10X but it usually fouls out quick. Maybe this tube wants mega doses of carbon. Its obviously somehow different than any other 204 tube I've had. Or its just a total stinker.
