Reloader 10x, 40 grain vmax load data

Post by Inrut24/7 »

I tried some 40 grain v-max loads in my howa with Reloader 15 and to my surprise these things are grouping great, maybe better than the 39 blitzking, but more tests will tell, I want to try these with 10x but cant find any data on 10x with the 40 grain vmax, I am using 25.1 grains of 10x with the 39 grain blitzkings and see no pressure signs.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a starting load of reloader 10x with the 40 grain vmax?

The 40gr. Vmax is only 1 grain heavier than the 39 SBK. My suggestion, and this is only my opinion, would be to start at the lower end of the loads for the 39 gr bullet which is 21.6 gr. RE10X. The MAX[ load for the 39gr. sbk is 25.1 gr. Work up your loads from the lower end, and work up slow, keeping an eye for any pressure signs.
I worked up some loads for the 40gr Vmax and H4895 that actually are very accurate out of my Howa, not as accurate as the 39gr SBK's, but if I have to use a different powder and bullet combo, I have an alternate load to fall back on.
What ever you decide to do, just remember to be careful, and enjoy your experience! :D

Having seen loads posted "Over Maximum" for RL-10X on this forum and not getting any reply when I questioned those loads; I proceeded to work up and chronograph some over max loads myself in my Savage 12VLP stainless with Sierra 39gr BlitzKings. Loads were 2.312 O.A.L.
Load #1...25.5gr. RL-10X Rem 7 1/2BR primer Hornady case 10ft. from muzzle = 3810fps
Load #2...25.8gr. Rl-10X Rem 7 1/2BR primer Hornady case 10 ft. from muzzle = 3860fps
Velocities were averaged. Primers were still rounded on sides no noticible flattening (normal Savage cratering)..BUT when measuring body diameter of the cases below the head, I measured 1/2 thousanth more expansion on the 25.8 load so I did not try for the 26.2 load that another poster uses. Now granted he used Winchester brass; I did not try WW brass as I have mine all loaded up for my PD shoot next week. I will try WW brass when I return from Wyoming to see if the results differ. This post is "FOR INFO ONLY". If you load above maximum in your rifle or use the above loads posted.. you do so at your own risk. What may be safe in my rifle may not be safe in yours. :chin:
For the 40gr. Berger I use 25.1 Rl-10X WW brass O.A.L. 2.256 = 3750fps 10ft from Muzzle

tryed some more reloader 10x to see how much i could push the 39gn blitzking .went up to 27gn of rl10x,39gn bullet was doing over 4,000 fps but i had pressure signs on the primers (raised ) and after looking on quickload i thought better off not trying this much powder again and am now sticking with the 25.1gn load to be on the safe side as its doing 3755fps , shame really as it shot very well indeed two shots in the same hole at 100mtrs ..quickload also says that my 32gn sbk and 26.5gn of rl10x is doing 4150fps out of my 22" barrel ..its good enough :D

I tried some 10x for the first time yesterday. I started with 24.4 and worked up to 25.2 grains behind some 40 grain Bergers. This was in my 1/9 twist Dtech AR and the best group was with the 25.2 load. I reloaded 25 more today at 25.2 and I hope the groups stay as tight as the first. If they stay tight I will take a picture of them and post them. If they shoot as good in my 1/12 twist upper I will be very happy. The 1/9 twist blows up my 39 SBK's so that is why I tried the 40 Bergers in the 1/9. The Bergers have a thicker jacket. The 25.2 load had a speed of about 3800 fps. in 95 degree heat with no pressure signs.

I finally tried the 25.8gr load with the 39gr. Sierra BK with Winchester brass and Rem. 7 1/2BR primers. Its a fine shooting load all the way out to 600yds. which is the longest distance range (of 6) our club has (Aurora Sportsmens Club). If I get out there (before the wind comes up) early enough (64 miles one way) my Savage 12 VLP will group that load into 2 1/2" to 3" groups at 600 sometimes smaller. You can see the effect of the wind when a gust catches a bullet. As the morning progresses the "mirage" effect causes vertical stringing because the 25x scope crosshairs are hard to lock in horizontally with the bullseye moving with the mirage. Great Fun.
