Newbie to reloading

Post by tc4me »

I am new to reloading. I will be reloading 223 remington and 204 ruger. I would like to know if there is a powder that suits both calibers. I will be shooting 39 grn bk's in the 204 and 55 grn bk's in the 223. I have been looking at BL-C2, h4895, and reloader 10. Am I on the right track?

Yes you are. Check the Load Dept. at the top banner of the forum, as many good loads are listed. Most powders that work in the 223 also do double duty in the 204....almost the same case.

Accurate 2460 is very good in the 223 with 55 gr bullets. Shoots well in the 204 with the whole range of bullets from 32 -40 grains. Very close to BL-c2 on the burn rate chart.

tc, until today, my favorite powder for the 204 was RL10X with the 39gr Sierra

My favorite load is now 27gr of Benchmark with the 39gr bullet. Extremely accurate and fast. One, FIVE shot group was 3/8" at 100 yards. Another 5 shot group was also good with 5 shots in 1/2". The 3rd group was not quite as good with "me" ruining it with a "flyer", but 4 of those shots were under 1/2".

The above is a hot load, so start lower. Velocity is 3725 fps in 70 degree temp at sea level. Higher temp & higher elevation will be well over 3800 fps.

Benchmark is also my current powder for my 223, however with the 50 & 40 gr bullets. Never tried it with the 55gr. Anyway, 28.5grs and the 40gr nosler b.t. produces good accuracy at approx 3800 fps. Extremely high velocity in a 223. Many powders work well in the 223. RL10X & Benchmark are tops, followed by W748, Varget & H335 to name a few.

Benchmark would be my choice if picking only one powder for both calibers.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the input. I decided to go with BL-C2. Going to get my reloading bench this weekend and try to run my first loads. Hopefully get out and get some shooting in also. Has anyone tried the Hornady 45sp's? Thinking that might be a good round for yotes.
