Good Powder for Varmint Grenade?

Post by FireBallGuy »

What is a good powder choice for use with this bullet? Have some H4198 laying around which I have heard will work rather well, any other suggestions?

I had pretty good luck with N-133 but if you don't have any I wouldn't bother searching.
RL-7 would be a good bet also.

Benchmark also worked good but burned to clean in my gun to keep accuracy sustained at super high velocitys.
Eventually I'll try Win 748 but I'll probably run out of case capacity pretty quick.

Due to the lightweight and low BC I think they'll perform best at under 200yds. No expierience to back that up though.

:D I think I've figured out this paste and copy stuff.

I had to search for the info you requested. I do not save loading data very long.
Seeing as I shoot Audette ladders I have no qualms about reworking a particular load if I desire.

BM showed accuracy potential but was not sustainable in my current tube at the velocities I was interested in acheiving.

Read the post theres some good info in it from lots of folks.

I have done some testing with the VG's and this is what I ended up with
23.3 gr of H-4198
26.3 gr of RL-10X
27.8 gr of benchmark
All of these loads will print out at about 1/2".
I do have a pound of RL-7 and would like to try it as I think it would work quite well for these light weight pills, but would like some info as to min's and max's for this powder and bullet combo.
At close range they have pretty good "red mist" action. Never did try them out at longer ranges. They have a lousy BC so cross winds will be very brutal on them.
I did receive an E-mail from Ty at Barnes with an updated list of powders and loads to use. You can view them from here.
