Shooting bench project

Today I got my late uncles shooting bench. It needs some TLC. I will replace the boards, sand, prime and paint the frame. I took these pictures today, more to come.

Should turn out very nice. He sure made the base a good solid project, for sure. Have you thought of covering the top with some carpeting ?

I hadn't thought about carpeting. My cousin has a big pile of pergilo? Synthetic wood he uses to make decks. That will be the replacement woos. I am not lefthanded...

Why I mention it, is that both a shooting buddy and I, when we built or remodeled our swivel benches, we finished the top off with a grey, flat wool type of carpet. Makes it nicer to shoot off of, for both lack of slipping and also it does not get hot, like a painted wood surface does, sitting out in the pivots on a nice bright sunny day. And things don't roll or slide around as they do on a painted wood surface. My thoughts anyway.

That I don't know, as I don't leave my swivel bench (Portable) up, except when I go out shooting. So it does not get left standing out in weather.

Only exception, is with maybe a light rain or snow (like photo) when I am out shooting in such. Bill K

I moved the heavy bench into my barn with the tractor and started in with an angle grinder. I am going to get a paint wheel for it Saturday.

Just curious, from the photos, did you not give the frame a base coat of a anti rust primer, then the white cover paint ? Or is that a type of rust protection paint ? Just a thought, that came to me.

That is a primer on there, its gray in color. I am about 40 % done. When complete, it will go to my cousins paint booth for a couple of good coats, then we will attach new pergila? type material to the top of it. Then back to my ranch, to eventally sit on top of a new 8x8 pad of concrete on my rifle range.
