AR with 1-7 twist ?

Recently purchased a 16.5 inch carbine barrel for one AR lower. 1-7 twist and it is shooting well. Now I know this twist is for heavy bullets and it does very well with the 60-70 grainers I have tried, so far.. But I am also shooting 50-55 bullets in it and averaging around 1 inch to 1 1/4, which I believe is reasonable for this twist.. Old age, 4 power scope and all. What are other opinions, just for my information. Bill K

Hey Bill,
I have a 1-8 twist varmint barrel and I shoot the 40 grainers no problem, so I would think 50-55s would work for you. Be interesting to find out.

Yes it will. What grouping does your's seem to run with ? Right now I am happy with what it is doing, considering everything, with this outfit. Thank you. Bill K. By the way what powder you running, I am using the CFE 223, so far.

My best group with 40 grainers was .43"...using h335. I bought an 8lb can before CFE came out or I would be using it instead. I use Varget for the 62 grainers and up. 77 grain SMKs are the best for the larger bullets.

Thank you.. So far I am happy enough with CFE, so will stick with it for now. Down the road I may give some of the others a try. Stay well. Bill K

Recommended twist rates are a funny thing. I was mentored into an AR after many years of swearing I never wanted to see one again as long as I lived. I bought a Bushmaster Predator with a 1 in 8 twist knowing that twist would work well with heavy bullets..."WRONG"! 55 and 60 grainers with Benchmark shoot better than I ever thought possible out of a Mighty Mattel but much over that bullet weight and it opens up, way up
.
Not knowing what to do with the mess a 77 grain Sierras MatchKings I bought I did the only reasonable thing a guy could do, I got a screaming deal on a 1 in 7 twist Daniel Defense M4V5. Soon as this weather breaks I guess I'll find out if I need another AR or not.
They sure have come a long way over the years, unfortunately my will power hasn't.
