Barrel Length

Post by panther85 »

Just getting started with a .204 ruger project based on .223/5.56 AR15 platform and was looking for input on the best barrel length for the .204 ruger. I was thinking probably a 20" or maybe a 24? Any good data out there? Thanks!

Nothing like good research

This sort of confirms my thinking on barrel length for the .204R.

Of interest is the amount of muzzle blast with the 14 inch barrel - I would not guess it would be that bad with the small powder charges used by the .204R.

Also of interest are higher velocities with the 23 inch compared to the 24 inch. Is this because of bullet drag or something else?

Some time ago when I had my .17 Rem made the gunsmith told me that I could get optimum results with a shorter barrel and he put a 22 inch Lilja 4 groove barrel on the rifle and I easily get more than 4000 fps with the 25 gr. Vmax and IMR 8208 XBR.
