Pics of a couple of LRPV's

My buddy brought over his Savage LRPV tonight for me to get his scope mounted up and I took a couple pics of it. He bought this rifle on my recommendation as I have an LRPV in 6mm Norma BR and it is the most accurate gun in my safe. It's one of those guns where you really don't have to try hard at all to shoot quarter inch groups.

His is in 204 and I can't wait to shoot it. I got mine out for some side by side pics. His gun is sporting a Richard Near 10 MOA base with a set of Leupold rings and a Leupold VXIII 6.5X20X40mm LR w/ a Varmint reticle. Mine has a Near 10 MOA base, a set of Near rings and a Leupold VXIII 6.5X20X50mm LR w/ a Varmint reticle. These guns weigh in around 13 lbs each and are boat anchors... I made a 505 yard shot on a PD last year. He is going PD'ing with me and my sons this year for the first time ever.

In all seriousness, I've had the chance to spend a bit of time with an LRPV in 6 BR and it would absolutely drive nails.

Mine is the most accurate gun in my safe.... And I have two safes filled with with all flavors of rifles - Coopers, Kimbers, Wby's, Tikkas, Sako's Custom shop Remington, full off customs etc.

Gun writer David Petzel in Field and Stream said the LRPV was the only factory rifle that he has ever tested that would consistently shoot 1/4" 5 shot groups with factory ammo. I have some other rifles that will shoot 1/4" groups but none with as little effort as this gun if that makes any sense at all.

If someone would have told me 5 to 7 years ago that I would have one Savage, much less three in my safe I would have told them they were nuts. People always said they were accurate but I would pick one up and screws would be driven in crooked on the trigger guard and the general overall quality just wasn't there. While they still are not perfect and some people think their actions are big, bulky and sloppy and the barrel nut and bolt release are unsightly they do shoot very well.

I actually just got another one that delivered to me this week and I am very excited about its potential. Here is the story on my new one; I have been wanting another 308, specifically a 308 bolt gun with a tactical feel and 24" barrel that I could use for target shooting long ranges (we just built a new 1000 yard range about 20 mins from my house) and for an extra bolt gun for deer hunting (I ave three sons and one daughter that all hunt so we can always use another deer rifle). So I was pretty well decided I was going to buy an FNH TSR XP 24" barrel. I handled one and it had several features that I liked such as a Hogue stock, made in the FN plant in SC with the FN military rifles and barrels and he new model 70's (I also just bought a supergrade and love it) and some of the TSR XP's have Near rails on them which is a $175 feature. So somehow I got diverted and started looking at Savages again. I was attracted to the Law enforcement line and I tend to gravitate to the Savages with aftermarket stocks because I am not a fan of the Savage stocks. So I was going to get the Savage 10 FCP McMillan, it comes with a McMillan A5 stock and has an MSRP of $1400, I did my research and read the reviews and read what people who owned them wrote and they are a half inch gun, easy. However they all said that they got the gun bedded after buying it because it was not bedded at all (no surprise) However the FCP HR Precision is bedded and it reviewed just as well if not better and for once it was actually cheaper with an MSRP of $1158.

So bought the Savage model 10 FCP HR Precision in 308. I picked it up last Friday and it is sweet, the stock feels great, the barrel is ceracoted (or parkerized or something similar), all I know it is tough as heck and the gun feels great, nice crown smooth short action, love it. I talked to my buddy Richard Near and he is sending me a 20MOA picatinny rail, I already have some 1" Leupold MK4 med rings and a sweet Zeiss Conquest 6.5X20X50 with the Rapid Z 1000 reticle (which I bought specifically for my future 308 in mind). The rapid Z1000 is made for the 308 and I am hoping that I can work up a load with a 168, 175 or a 190 matchking that will work well with the 1000 yard reticle.

Anyway sorry for the long winded response but I am a rifle nut and I enjoy every detail of why people do what with rifles that I tend to think people think like me (God help you if you do).

here it is.

I worked up 5 different loads for it over the weekend and yesterday I went shooting.

A couple 65GR Vmax

A couple 55GR blitz king

one 70GR match King

Every group looked like this, not even kidding. Also the wind was blowing so I think they could have been better.
