New look for my .204!

Post by 7mag »

I got my new stock unfinished and did my own inletting, finishing, and bedding. I don't think it came out to bad for a first time job. She shoots hundred yard one hole groups at the range now.(with the right load. 26.7 gr RL15, 35 gr bergers) For pics. of groups see post in 204 reloading under 7mag and wn.mag at the range.

I'd say the 'new look' is a Good Look. Nice rifle/scope combination, nice work on it also. I can almost feel your smile from here. Good job. :D

Nice looking job. There is great satisfaction in doing it yourself. I have several thumbhole stocks, one unfinished one to work on. I shoot better with the thumbholes but have a downside if you want to switch to the left shoulder because the coyote came in from the wrong side!!

The new look did more than help appearance! Factory 40 grain v-max @ 200 yds. Just doing some group testing today.

My wife put up 2 nice groups at 50 yards today! She's not fired a rifle more than half a dozen times in her life before today! Darn good job I'd say!

Flash, Its easy, Just get in touch with Boyds, or another thumb hole stock builder and order it!! :D Then spend the time to finish and fit it to your gun.

As Wnmag says, Boyds has them already finished for around $92. I got mine at a gun show with a factory sporter channel and had alot of inletting to do. A good friend helped with the glass bedding job and it is a great shooter now. I Will be doing all my own from now on. It is alot of fun, and easier than paying for it! Am going to order one for my model 7 in .204, and savage 110 in 7 mag next. Should only have to bed them and do slight inletting to float the barrel when they have the right channel to start with. If you use an after market trigger (like the jewell...) you have to open the trigger well a little for the safety, but no big deal.

I have a Savage Model 12 that I'll be getting back from a family member this week. Long story, it's a Model 12FV, and I don't like synthetic stocks, so I ordered a Ross Thumbhole Varmint stock from Boyd's for about $100. It looks like it's going to look a lot like that Remmie, only a nutmeg finish.

I'll post pics of it when I get it all together.

I'm hoping that my rifle is going to be as accurate as 7Mag's.
