Remmy SPS anyone know?

I'm seeing these going for about $450 at Dick's with a "varmint" barrel, camo stock, and a cheapie scope when they are on sale. Bass Pro is selling the green tupperware version with no scope for the same price, on and off.

Does any one know if the action or barrel is a ratty version or something? I see they have a poverty finish, which is fine with me, but I'm thinking they may be using use lower grade steel, do sloppy machining job, or cut short on QC on these for that price.

Does anyone know for sure?

BS: The M700 action on any Remmy is the same except for a 40X. Weather it's a bargin-basement model, or one of their custom shop actions......all the same, just varying degrees of better fit/finish for the 'upper' models. They just bead blast the cheapies and blue 'em, send 'em out the door, zero or minimal polishing required. I'm sure the custom shop looks for bolts with minimal need for lapping too.

Barrels? Now that may be another story. I had one PSS .308W barrel recently that had 3" of rifling missing from one side of the barrel near the muzzle! Hence my passion for custom barrels. But in all fairness to Remington, I've got another .308W VS that shoots Federal Preminum 168gr Match into 3/8" groups all day at 100......go figure. :? None of my varmint rifles wear factory barrels these days though.

Those 2 specials you mentioned are, I believe, both ADLs. Cabela's has a special SPS Varmint with a stainless action, jewelled bolt, and matte stainless barrel, and is BDL (floor-plate) based. It's only around $600 - and sometimes with a rebate - and IMO is much more gun for the $. Mine shot suprisingly well out of the box, and I just changed over to a B&C stock; haven't shot it since but should do even better, if not it sure looks better.

I have a Rem 700 SPS Tactical (.223) with a HS stock and would be hard pressed to let it go for the prices being mentioned....

Image

It has a 1/12 twist and loves the 60gr Hornady V-Max at longer ranges...
