Maximum Point Blank Range for factory Federa 39gn?

Post by Griff »

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me the MPBR for the factory federal 39gn sierra pill? I am shooting a Savage model 12 LRPV with a Leupold VX3L 6.5-20 x 56. over medium rise Leupold mounts.

Ballistics data from the Federal website suggest that for a 200yd zero I should be +0.8 at 100yds which will make me -4.7inches at 300yds.

However I think that I would prefer to sight it in for the MPBR of this round... That is +/- 1.5"

Thanks.

If that Leupy has the Varmint reticle,They recomend a zero of 300yds.I believe they are close. The 39gr at 3700,or the 32gr at 4000+FPS,can be sighted in 1.5" high at 100yds,and be on fur to 400yds (PDs).Check drop tables, and call Sierra,as I suggested in other post.

Thanks Joe O.

I have the fine duplex on my Leupold. Unfortunately living in Australia I don't have the luxury of being able to call Sierra - which is partly why I rely on these posts and other web pages so heavily.

I guess what I really need to know is what my point of impact will be for 100,200,300,400 yds to utilise a correct MPBR.

Griff,
If you google ' Hornady external balistics' you can put bullet weight, calibre, fps and any zero you want in, to get the fiures you require. Regards,Ken.

Here's a link to the online trajectory and wind deflection program by JBM:

http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi

You need the BC of the bullet, .287 for the 39 gr. Sierra, your velocity at whatever distance you have your chronograph set up, and a few other things such as the temperature, and barometric pressure. You also need to fill in bullet weight, and numbers for how high the center of your scope is over the center of the bore. Once you look at the program onscreen you'll figure out how to use it.
