hello fellas , please bear with me as ive just bought a savage model 16 and am like a kid with a new toy !!. im running it on remington 32grn factory at the moment until i can get some decent home loads made up, my question is ,what distance would you recommend me sighting it in at to give a reasonabley flat trajectory out to 400yds?
also would anyone have any idea where i could acsess a drop chart for the 32grn? i shot my first rabbit last night with the .204 at 230yds and wow what a buzz ! .the poor creature virtually evaporated ! i can see this becoming a compulsion and my wife citng the savage in a divorce as the " other woman ". regards dan.
I sight my 204s in at 200 yards. When shooting a 39gr Blitzking with a 200 yard zero; it will be .8 high at 100 yards, 4.3 inches low at 300 yards and 12.4 inches low at 400 yards.
i sighted in a 35 gr berger ( not chronoed ) 25.2 grs of 10x , at 200 yds it is 3/4'' high and at 300yds it is 5 1/4'' low . these numbers have been repeatable . i have to take a wild guess that my velocity is around 3800 fps .

when I sight mine it it will be at 200, and they make a drop chart by 50s from 50 to 400. This is what I would like to do anyway, I may find in the field it may not work as good as I plan in my head =)
I'm still working with my Leupold VX3 LR with the Varmint reticle.They recomend a sight in distance of 300yds,which I thought was too far,but shooting out to 400yds,they may be right.I'm thinking a 225-240 yard zero would be about right, at 3700fps MV.

300 yard zero seems way too far to me as well. I have that exact same scope/reticle combo and I have my zero set at 100 yards. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but that has worked well for me out in the prairie dog fields.

I'm still working on it.I thought the same thing,and use the lower bars for 2,3,and 400yd distances.I go to the 400yd range tomorrow.
Mike,I believe they are right.I tried a 1" high set at 100yds.Shot high at 200yds,used 2ND lower bar at 300 and it shot high,then 3nd bar at 400 went over the target.Re-read the instructions,which stated to sight in on the main Xhair at 100yds (large triangle on power ring (17X).
That's what I'LL TRY THE NEXT TIME I'M AT THE 400YD RANGE.Now the first lower bar should be 400yd,then 500,600,etc.Different scope/reticle combinations could be a nightmare.
A 32-grain Nosler @4000 fps has a 1" max point blank range of 211 yards. Presuming your rifle shoots to 1 MoA, that means that you can zero at 200 yards and aim dead-on to any target 3" in diameter or larger out to 200 yards and squeeze the trigger, no calculations or hold-over necessary. The only variable you'd have to consider is wind. Holdover isn't even a consideration until you're beyond 200.
With a 300-yard zero, hold-under is 3" @100 yards and 4" @200 yards.
