I have factory Hornady 32 gr. and 40 gr. bullets and may have mixed them up. The primers appear the same, each seems to be identical to the other. Colors do not vary between the two rounds (both have gold cases, copper-colored bullets topped with a red tip). So I am in a pickle: I am going shooting and may have 32's in my 40 box and vice versa. I do not have a scale to weigh them. I was wondering if any of you have any clue as to how the rounds may be distinguished from one another.

Find someone with a sensitive scale.

You can weigh the loaded rounds one at a time (the difference being 8 grains; BUT the 32gr. load uses 31.1grs. of factory ball powder and the 40 gr. uses 29.3grs of the same powder so now you have a 6 grain difference (approximately) instead of a 8gr. difference. Then there is the slight difference in the weight of the brass. So.....you will need a sensitive scale and look for a +6 grain difference (40gr. bullet) in weight. Hope that helps.

The most simple way I can think of is weigh them all, sort them into two piles, you now know one is 32 and one is 40. Sacrifice one and pull the bullet. Weigh the bullet and you now know which pile is which.
