Hi, this is my first post,hope someone can help. I am looking to buy a Remington in 204 cal. and would like a short barrel ( predator) the twist is 1 in 9 but all the other Remmy. models in 204 are 1 in 12 twist. Does barrel length dictate twist rate or is it just bullet weight? My remmy. model 7 in .17 fireball has a 1 in 9 twist as does my model 7 in .22/250, can't make sense of it. any advice will be thankfully received. kenbrofox.

Ken: There was a recent post with many threads on this exact subject a short while ago. Some of the most knowledeable guys contend that twist is really designed for bullet length, not weight, but most of the time (not always), a heavier bullet will be longer......the heavier/longer the bullet is, the faster twist it will require. (You may want to search for that post....good reading)

It would appear Remington is departing from some of what could have been called their "standard" twists in some of their new rifles. My M700 in 22-250 wears a 14 twist barrel, all my .223's have 12's, Hornets either 14 or 16, my various 17's all have 10 twist tubes. Barrel length has nothing to do with twist, at least it never has. (You can illustrate this with something like a .45 ACP.....5" barrel with a 16 twist; the bullet will NOT make one complete revolution in the barrel prior to exit......)

So.....it looks like Remington is intending the rifles you mention with a 9 twist for the heavy for caliber bullets suitable for the intended caliber. I personally have not seen a factory 204R barrel with a nine twist, only custom tubes.....something new every day, but you could bet your breakfast that the 9 twist would most likely shoot the 40's, 45's, and best of all, the 50's very well. Great for long range shooting, but reduced velocity due to the heavy bullet.

Which model of the 700 did you find with a 9 twist barrel in .204 Ruger?

Rick, I'm willing to bet that Remington made a typo with the twist rate on that .204 Remington. They've NEVER been adventurous with twist rates, and I doubt that this rifle is any different I might be wrong, but I'd bet lunch it's a typo, and that the rifle will have a 1-12" twist when it comes in.

Hello there Rick& Glenn, Thanks for quick reply, some interesting info there. I hav'nt seen a mod. 700 with 9 twist it's a mod. 7 predator in 204. My22-250 is a mod. 7 with 20 inch barrel, i've had this for 12 months but it's not in the remmy. brochure for 2008. I got all my info. from the 2008 remington catolog as follows: model 700 .204 1 in 12.

predator " 7 .22-250 1 in 9 and 1/8

I'd call Remington to make sure its not a typo. I'm a Savage guy and they have typos in thier catalogs. It happens.

It would be great if Remmy indeed decided to tighten up the twist some. In my opinion its needed to shoot the heavies reliably. Great place to start would be thier predator for coyote hunters. Nonetheless I would'nt simply trust the literature for this. Babas link shows no 9 twist.

Savage now offers tighter twist tubes in the 22-250 and .223 but they left the 204 at 12.
I'd be one of the first to order any tighter twist Sav 204 tube. I think I'll contact them and push a little.

If Remmy beats Savage to it GREAT. My hats off to them. Might even convince me to buy a Remington.

HI BabaOriley & jo91145, Thanks for replies. Will measure twist in my model 7 CDL .22-250 after thinking it's been 1 in 9 1/8 for the last 12 months. Will see if i can get remington to confirm/deny 1 in 9 1/8 twist in mod. 7 predator. will post results. cheers kenbro.
