HUNTING SHACK - CABELA'S AMMO?????

HELLO ALL.....JUST RECEIVED MY NEW (TO ME) .204 REMINGTON LVSF OFF GUNBROKER.COM - I HOPE IT SHOOTS AS PRETTY AS IT LOOKS. ANYWHO, I DO NOT RELOAD AND AM THINKING ABOUT "PULLING THE TRIGGER" ON 200 ROUNDS FROM CABELA'S/HUNTING SHACK. I'M NOT SURE WHETHER TO CHOOSE THE 32 OR 40 REMINGTON ACCUTIP OR THE 32 OR 40 HORNADY V-MAX. I GUESS MY MAJOR CONCERN IS BUYING 200 ROUNDS OF SOMETHING THAT MY RIFLE DOES NOT LIKE. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

I'M THINKING OF ADDING SILVER, MEDIUM, LEUPOLD MOUNTS (I THINK THAT THESE ARE THE LOWEST THAT WILL WORK???) WITH A 4-12AO LEUPOLD VX-II. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON ONE VS. TWO PIECE MOUNTS AND DO YOU THINK THAT I COULD USE "LOW" LEUPOLD MOUNTS WITH THE SCOPE MENTIONED??? SORRY FOR ASKING ELEMENTARY QUESTIONS, BUT I'M REALLY TRYING TO LEARN HOW TO ACCESSORIZE MY OWN RIFLES THE RIGHT WAY. I WILL LIKELY HAVE A GUNSMITH ADJUST THE TRIGGER PULL AND SHORTEN THE L.O.P.

ANY HELP SETTING UP MY NEW GUN WOULD CERTAINLY BE APPRECIATED AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP.

TAKE CARE,

NBC

personally i like the hornady's 32 grain v-max i used to shoot the 40 but my gun decided it is going to start likeing the 32-grainers so thats is what i went with....they shoot nice....dont have a drop (unless you are getting into the 300+ yards) i shot mine today at 100 yrds and put 3 inside a half inch hole give er take a few centimeters but overall thats probably the best grain shot that my gun has tried from hornady...what type of yardage are you going to be shooting? and hopefully you get your gun out to shoot..sounds like a nice gun

Sounds like a nice rig you got there!! Can't wait to see her!!

Depends on what you want for groups. If 1" at 100yds is acceptable for your needs then you will probably be OK with any of those you mentioned. You gotta remember the 40's don't work in all 204's. Only some of them. The 32's are probably around 98% for sub 1" groups @ 100yds. Persoanlly I would try a box of each if possible. I believe they also load the 39gr BlitzKing from Sierra too. These are very accurate bullets when hand loaded. I can't vouch for the factory ammo.

Welcome to the forum NBC, It sounds like you got a nice new toy to play with. But like Glen said I would buy a box of each to see what your gun likes befor going out and getting 200 rounds of any thing. Let us know how she shoots when you get that far ok.

I WILL LIKELY HUNT COYOTES (WE RUN THEM WITH DOGS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS) AND WOODCHUCKS WITH MY NEW .204. WE'VE KILLED COYOTES AT ALL RANGES DURING THE CHASE. SOME GUYS CARRY SHOTGUNS EXCLUSIVELY AND TAKE HEAVY COVER POSTS WHEN THE CHASE IS ON AND THEY TAKE THIEIR FAIR SHARE. AS FOR THE WOODCHUCKS, I'M NOT A LONG RANGE SHOOTER BY ANY MEANS - 300 YARDS OR LESS. I WALK FROM ROUND BAIL TO ROUND BAIL MORE OR LESS SCOUTING FOR DEER ALL SUMMER. I GUESS I'M MORE OF AN OPPORTUNISTIC WOODCHUCK HUNTER. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MY SCOPE/MOUNTING OPTIONS??? :chin:

AS FOR THE HORNADY AMMO FROM CABELAS, DO YOU THEINK THE SMALLER BOXES OF HORNADY AMMO FROM HORNADY SHOOT THE SAME AS THAT LOADED BU HUNTING SHACK??? IS IT MORE ABOUT THE BULLET THAN THE ACTUAL LOADING??? :chin:

THANK YOU FOR THE QUICK REPLIES GENTLEMEN AND TAKE CARE.

The 32's will work fine for your style of groundhog sniping. If it's standing up out there at 300yds just put the crosshairs betweeen it's eyes & :reddot:  . You'll probably drop down to the throat but it will still be a lethal hit. When the 204 1st came out I had to shoot factory stuff. There were no dies available right away & reloading supplies were scarce anyhow. The Hornady 32's were very consistent & the only box of Rem 32's shot the exact same POI.

Scope-- When you go to your dealer have them get the Leupold book out. It will/should show which rings will/should work. My gun shop will open the package & set them on so I can see if they work or not. The scope you've chosen will work real good for what you want to do. The 4x will be real nice for locating the coyote thru it. You could use more on the range tho but I think you can easily make do with the 12x. I'm not trying to sway you here either but have you checked out the Weaver V16?? You'll stay down at,, I think,, 4.5x but be able to go up to 16x. Just a suggestion.

GLEN...THANX FOR THE HELP. HEADING TO THE CABELA'S IN WV TOMORROW TO ACCESSORIZE MY NEW GUN. I'LL DEFINITELY CHECK OUT THAT WEAVER AND LIKELY START WITH THE HORNADY 32'S. I THINK THAT THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF MY NEEDS JUST FINE. I'LL PICK UP A SMALL BOX FIRST THEN PERHAPS TRY THE HUNTING SHACK STUFF IF EVERYTHING WORKS OUT OK. TAKE CARE.

NBC,
Welcome to the forum! I use Hunting Shack ammo in my .204 and have no complaints. It is less expensive than other brands (I've paid anywhere from $25 to $27.99 for a box of 50) I use both the 32 grain and the 39 grain depending on the wind and My remington 700 eats it up. I just used about 150 rounds on sage rats this weekend. Gary

as far as the lupy 4-12x40 ao scope, my belief is that you will need at least medium height rings, because the bell is actually bigger on the ao scopes. i had to go with the high rings on my Howa 1500. I mounted a lupy 6-18x40 ao on it and i had to use the high rings. the mediums were not high enough for the bell to be adjusted, although the scope mounted just fine with them.

GENTLEMEN.....THANKS FOR THE INFO. WENT TO CABELA'S IN WV LAST SUNDAY AND BURNED THROUGH MY $805 IN POINTS I HAD SAVED FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS BY USING THEIR CREDIT CARD. YEILDED A 4-12 LEUPOLD VX-II, BASES, AND MEDIUM RINGS. ALSO BOUGHT SOME LEUPOLD FLIP-UP SCOPE COVERS. NICE MACHINED ALUMINUM DESIGN BUT PRICY COMPARED TO BUTLER CREEKS. I'M THINKING ABOUT DRESSING UP THE STOCK A BIT WITH WITH THAT PAINT THAT LOOKS LIKE SILLY STRING - I'M THINKING A MEDIUM GRAY COLOR? ANY THOUGHTS? :chin: I SHOT HER TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME AND WAS FAIRLY IMPRESSED WITH THE "OUT OF THE BOX" ACCURACY. TRIGGER NEEDS ADJUSTED DOWN AND I MAY FLOAT THE BARREL AND GLASS THE ACTION IN THE OFF SEASON BUT IT'S TOO EARLY TO TELL - I NEED TO SHOOT IT MORE. TAKE CARE.
