Ammo for Savage 12BGTV

Post by ssm »

New here to the forums, this is a great place with a wealth of info.

I am going to purchase a Savage 12BGTV (thumbhole stock) in the very near future, which will be my first .204 owned.

My question is , what are some of the better factory ammo to try in a Savage Rifle?

thanks in advance

I have only shot three factory loads.

Hornady 32 and 40 V-Max (the 40 didn't shoot very well) and Federal Premium sporting the 39 BlitzKing (great shooting ammo in my rifle).

I mostly shoot reloads now, but I'd like to try some Remington Accutips and Winchester 34 grain JHPs.

Edit:

The Hunting Shack sells ammo in 204 Ruger that include Calhoon and Berger bullets.

Try everyone of them. Every gun is different so you won't know until you try. Do you reload?

ssm Welcome to the forum.

I only shoot factory ammo when the tube is new but Federal 39's seemed the best in my present tube.
As far as reloading I haven't found a barrel yet that has'nt preferred one of the Bergers over all others.
KVW is right though. You'll have to try all of them if you want to know exactly which one is best.

KVW Congrats on the postal shoot, you did very well. I'll be gunning for you next time.
I won't bother telling Hawkeye Joe that though  He's supertweaked.

Thanks jo for the complement on the postal shoot. Your right though, old hawkeye is in a league of his own. I'm having problems finding N135 in my area. Are you guys?

Big time trouble buying Viht from a gunshop. Theres only one in my area that has any. They are not restocking it either. Just bought 2lbs of N-160 there. 1999 Vintage. Would have preferred 165 but no go.
I broke down and bought 8lbs of 133, 135, 140 off the web.

Yep Hawkeyes in a league of his own. Not expecting to knock him off his pedastal any time soon.
Tried to convince him beach sand is a huge improvement over JB but I don't think he's buying it
