New 204 CZ527 Varmint

Post by Elliott »

First off all, hi chaps, I'm new to the forum and today purchased the above rifle. I've currently got a:

- Tikka T3 Varmint 223,
- CZ527 22 Hornet;
- CZ452 22LR

I'm keen to glean as much information as I can on the CZ527 204 Ruger, so would like to hear from those who who have one.

I'm keen to develop loads using the 39gr Sierra Blitz. Hoping to get some good velocities out of the 25" barrel, so would like to hear about powders and brass that worked well and also any general advice, mods and tweaks that can be made to the CZ527. Wouldn't mind dropping and bedding it into a heavy Boyds thumbhole stock.

I've never owned a 204 either, so looking forward to hearing/reading more about the calibre. It'll be a long range varminting rig for me i.e. Rabbits, crows, magpies and foxes.

Thanks, Elliott

Welcome Elliott
You will love a CZ 527 Varmint. Have had mine about 5 years. A real tack driver. Here is a summery of my stuff;
Bore Tech cleaning rod, coated spring steel 44" and use jag.
Lucas custom bore guide made for 204 Ruger
2 die Lee set and neck size only. Have never had to full length size.
Best load: 39 BK, 25.6 gr Benchmark, 2.31 OAL, Norma brass.
.25 to .5 MOA when i am on my game.
Shoot straight

Here's the powder charge that I've settled on:
25.6 - 25.8 look good

Think I'll stick with 25.6 Chrono reads were 3,770fps, so it's quick enough.

Mod's and tweaks? I wanted to stay with the CZ stock but my setup was too light even with a 39 oz. scope and heavy rings. I had a piece of lead rod about 7/8" x 5" that weighed 20 oz. Removed the pad and drilled a hole just big enough for the lead rod to squeeze into. Have had a few sessions with it since and love it. The setup now weighs about 11.5 lbs. Very nice for controlling recoil so I can see my strikes.

Also put purple Loc-Tite on the adjustment screw on the set trigger, as I find they "walk to loose," making the pull too light, if I don't. Also purple Loc-Tite the action screws. Purple is very light and is reuseable for a few R&R's.

Oh, and I Perm-A-Tex the rear action screw spacer in its hole, so it doesn't keep falling out.

Other than threading for a suppressor, I don't feel the need to do anything else.
