Another item to add to the 'danger' list when cleaning, is a sectional cleaning rod; is about the most useless/dangerous item to enter a rifle bore, especially if it's uncoated aluminum. It will bend in the bore and abrade the lands, causing damage over time.
Then add a stainless steel cleaning brush....NOT! Bronze only please.
There's other cleaning dangers, but this is all that comes to mind at this moment.

Rick, The only use I have for those steel USGI sectional cleaning rods is using them for:
- using them with a M1/M14 USGI chamber brush;
- using them with the USGI combo tool especially with a M1 [removing gas cylinder plug, taking the rear sight out, disassembling the bolt, etc.]
Short of that....
