I was at the range today testing some loads, and decided to put some of Hornday's 45gr Spire Point ammo thru the chronograph, since I was using it with some of my rounds. I've got some of the bullets, and have been thinking about loading some. I've never hunted coyotes with them, but think it might be a good choice.
I put ten rounds down range, for an average of 3326fps, ES=114, SD=45....20" Shilen 1/9 barrel on my AR build. Max velocity was 3371, min was 3257.
When I looked at Hornady's website, I see they're showing 3625fps, and that the round is "temporarily unavailable."
Just curious if others have been using this factory round, and your thoughts and observations.
Thanks,
George

Re: Hornady 45gr Spire Point Ammo Velocity
Picked up 3 boxes of 45gr sp ammo a couple years ago when I couldn't find anything else at the time. Out of my Savage Predator they shot around 3550 to 3600 if my memory serves me right. Accuaracy in that rifle was around 3/4" @ 100. Shot them all up. Have'nt found any since. Shot a couple coyotes with them. Killed them DRT at 150 yrd. They didn't over penetrate, but they sure didn't splash either. Since then I've loaded the 45 Hornadys with RE-10x, RE-15, H4895, & xbr 8208. I never could get them to group very tiny groups, but with 26.5 gr of RE-15, I could keep 1 1/2" groups out to 200 yrds with good velocity, 3630 fps. They were designed by Hornady for the tougher varmints and they do the job well out to moderate ranges I've found. I haven't been able to get them sometimes, and I had 400 of those CRT 37 gr HP's on hand, so I switched over to them for my coyote killin needs with about 27 gr H4895, till they run out. Then I don't know what I'm gonna do. Maybe things will loosen up this next year.

cshooter: thanks for the response.....
I'll load some and see how they shoot.....I know I''m losing some velocity because of my 20" barrel but I wouldn't have expected it to be that much.
