New to me Savage .204

Post by FourMoCajuns »

Did some trading and ended up with a Savage 12 BGTVS in 204. Put a Vortex Viper 6.5-20 x 44PA on DNZ bases and this is how it shoots factory Hornady 40gr...........

Amazing how good they shoot with factory ammo, right out of the box.My LRPV shot a .333 with Federal ammo, back when they loaded with 39gr SBKs,
Good luck with it.You'll have fun.

This group measures .408 outside so .208 center to center but is only a three shot group.

If its .408 outside to outside, then centre to centre it's actually .204!! Couldn't ask for a better group ;)

Yeah I guess you are right.... I only subtracted 20 cal not the actual diameter. Now to try and duplicate the factory stuff.

I expect , with the proper components and experience, you'll surpass the factory stuff.

I 'spect this is a trade you'll never regret.

Col. Cooper used to say that a 3-shot group is a test of the rifle and a 5-shot group is a test of the rifleman.

I don't even bother shooting my Model 12 VL @100 yards because the groups are so danged small, the difference between them is too hard to measure. Every factory ammo I've ever tried shoots under 1" @200 yards. Handloads are just about half that. On calm days, if it doesn't group under 1/2" @200 yards, either me, my handloads or my rifle (or all three) is having a bad day:

Those are some nice groups, I recently purchased a used Howa 1500 Varmint in 204 R and I can't come close to those groups with factory or hand loads, I am jealous.

.204 Ruger Guns: Looking at a Savage

Re: New to me Savage .204

Im really looking at a single shot savage. I would rather make one good shot that drops what im aiming at and not need a second shot. Shooting a mates rolling block single shot its quite easy to make a follow up shot .... but you do have to take your eye off the target to do it. Even though its only for 2 secs.

Just read your post, and I am curious if you are still having trouble getting your Howa to shoot a decent group. I have never fired a factory round through mine, but have a few thousand rounds of my reloads thru mine. If I am up to the task, this rifle will still group under 1/2 in and I have groups around 3/8 in. All groups were shot @ 100yds and all are 5 shot groups. Also rifle is a Howa 1500 Varmint in 204R. It really loves 39gr.SBK's, and does almost as well with the 32gr V-Max.

I recently built a Savage package gun into a .204 varmint barrel (blued), a used former Model "10" barrel in it's other life and added a red blade accutrigger and the companion target sear.

The barreled action still resides in the original tuppeware stock but it REALLY SHOOTS!!!

I am getting 3 shot 100 yds. low .3" with the Hdy factory 32 gr. V-max ...........

......... and mid .2" with the same bullet same case but handloading ......... No CFE powder yet, however

All of this and I am still looking through the "package scope" as well.

Accuracy on the cheap!!

VIVA .204 Ruger!!!
