Magazine help wanted!

Post by boomer84 »

Hey guys

Was just chasing some info off you knowledgeable people on here.

I'm looking in to doing a custom rifle in the 204 and was thinking of going with a detachable magazine as i do a lot of shooting out of a 4WD so i thought it would be easier to reload than turning the rifle upside down and droping bullets ect. Just switch and go! So was wondering if you guys had any experience with these as i have only had hinged floor plate models?

What are the pros and cons? Does it effect OAL / accuracy?

Can i use just standard 223 mags or do they make them for the 204 specificly.

Thanks for your time and info in advance.

I know one converstion kit that uses detach mags and the model for the 223/204 are the same. You could email/call on of the outfits you are looking at and ask, to be sure. Bill K :)

Boomer', are you talking an AR-15? If so, I use the .223 mags and they work for me without a hiccup. I'm very happy with the accuracy also, and find that wether I single-feed or shoot from the magazine, accuracy is the same. at 300y, I'm doing about 1.5-2" in 5 shots, and 3 of the 5 will go into 1".

So are you saying you are shooting a bolt rifle? The AR-15 is semi-auto...

Boomer mentioned nothing about AR15
Reckon he's just looking at a bigger clip for his bolt gun = more rounds to shoot before refilling the magazine.
5 rounds can leave you short if you get onto a pack of pests

Bolt action rifle!!!!

As Southy said some times 5 aint enough! I've been swinging an extra 5 in my mouth and load single shot when my mag run dry! To hard to reload the hinged mag on the run.

One of those elastic or velcro ammo holders that wrap around the stock's butt would be a cheap quick fix until you get the bigger mag sorted. Still have to reload mag (possibly in the dark?) but at least you wouldn't have to hold them in your gob

Hi Boomer,

Both my short action Remington 700's are fitted with a detachable magazine system from 'Badger Ordnance' in .204 & 7mm - 08 cal, they make 5 & 10 round magazines.
They need inletting into the stock but if your having one built by a gunsmith no problems, its based on a .308 magazine with an internal conversion kit fitted to take the .204 case, they feed & eject very well & accuacy is not affected at all. As you say so much better than dumping your rounds into the grass by mistake in the dark & not finding them

Hope this helps regards Mark.

Yeah roger bow shot. Sorry mate, didn't see that til you pointed it out. See your point now.
Boomer - I used my ammo sleeve on a recent spotlight mission and it made the night a lot easier, but the 10 round mag would be awesome. 2 or 3 would be even better!!
Good luck with it mate

I would look for a 2nd hand sako 75 in 222 or 223 and build a rifle on that action as they have a great detachable mag system.
