Not 204 but need suggestions.
I have a 1978 winchester mod 70 xtr varmint .243 win. This was my grandfather's rifle and was passed down to me several years ago. The rifle is in great condition and I would like to keep it original and continue to use it, but it is starting to show throat erosion. I have been reloading for it and chasing the lands but it is to the point I can't get the bullet there anymore with enough left in the case. It still shoots well but not like it did. My question is what are my options with this gun and barrel is it possible to cut the barrel re-thread and re-chamber the factory barrel etc. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Any good smith can set the barrel back one or two turns, rechamber, and the rifle will be returned to almost new condition with fresh lands at the throat (hopefully).

+1 on setting the barrel back....Even if the smith has to go farther than a couple of thousandths and touching up the chamber with a new cut.... it will be worth it to keep it original...
