204 Ruger wins 300 yard belly match

Post by Hawkeye Joe »

Today we had our first 300 yard prone match(sling only).About 12 shooters showed and Yours truly won with his trusty Savage Predator with a compass in the stock  . The weather was nice and sunny with a switchy 15-20 mph wind. I got a few looks/laughs before the match and answered questions about the little 204 Ruger when it was over. I went in hoping for a middle of the pack score and came home with the trophy.. Pride!! I must admit,I'm a happy camper taking it to the old pro's today. The first 20 shot string I scored a 175 out of 200. The second 20 I pulled a "come from behind" 189 points to take the top spot. I wish Buddy could of seen the old man in action. The 5 holes with tape are the sighters.

I was surprised by the number of bolt guns shooting the match. It's a lot more work shooting a bolt compared to a semi auto. I shot my Les Baer .223 last year with a bipod. At the last match in 08 we voted to shoot without bipods in 09, Sling only! I caught some crap last year from my match buds telling me the gun was winning it for me. Don't think they'll be talkin that smack this year with my Savage Predator getting the tag in. Maybe I should have some fun with them and mount my 12-42 NightForce on top. I can picture the eye's rolling as I type. The guys also got a kick out of the vapor trail the 35gr Berger's were leaving behind. I could kinda see it through my scope. Everybody that looked at the little 204 round had the same reaction. They just said "HUH".. The glory has been fun, But now I need to beat myself and better my score...I must also share my satisfaction with my JHW Custom sling. I have 4 match slings and the JHW on my predator is my favorite. If your in the market, I highly recommend them. I guarantee you'll get the best of service!! Thanks for the kind words!!

Tom
Most shooters had .223's with three or four 30cals in the mix.

All club matches are open to the public. I think it's $5 for nonmembers. Google "Niagara County Sportsman Association" for event dates. We'll look foreword to seein ya!

Congratulations! Sounds like you had fun. I wish we had some kind of rifle competition events around here but all there seems to be is shotgun stuff. BTW what kind of load were you using with the Bergers :?:

They're listed in the back of every shooting sports USA magazine. They may be on the nra.org website under competitions. If not, there is a highpower email you can drop a line too that may be able to help you out.

Most of the matches we shoot are for fun. And FUN they are. The weekly 100 yard off-hand match is one of my favorite!! We also have a few National matches as well as a John Garand match. The load I was using was my standard 204 load. 26.6gr Benchmark,Old annealed Winchester brass(my predator rifle gets all the hand-me-downs), 35gr Berger,OAL 2.260 and Rem 7 1/2 primer. I chose the Rem 7 1/2 over the Fed gm205m because the Remington shoot 2 inches higher at 300 yards. Just discovered that a few weeks ago. At 100 both primers have the same point of impact in my 22 inch barrel. Never did test at 200.

Thanks Guy M

I read somewhere, "If you don't use it to stabilize your shot you might as well call it a strap."

While I understand the principle, could you explain (maybe with pics) how a sling like that is used?

That is awesome! I have a predator 204 myself, but after 1st time out realized the magazine is kinda screwed up and it is in transit now back to savage. I can't wait to get it back.
Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a link to a little article I put together a few years ago - the sling for field use.

http://precisionlongrangehunter.com/art ... ooting.htm

I used to shoot a bit of highpower and really enjoy using a sling, either for match shooting, or in the field.
