Cleaning problem

I bought a cleaning kit that my gun shop told me would work on my .204 barrel. I went to run the copper brush down the barrel and got about 1.5 inches in the barrel and realized it was too tight. Rather the jamming it down the barrel, I backed it out.....did I mess up anything?

Do you guys have a cleaning kit you recommend?

I use a solid steel one piece nylon coated rod by Kleenbore they sell for under $10 dollars then buy a bore guide because it can take some push to get the brush down the barrel the first time. I don't think you hurt your barrel any they are made of tough steel. I do believe in using the wire brush though to keep the rifling groves cleaned out.

While it is not advisable to reverse direction in the bore with a cleaning brush, you are lucky that you got it out. I use a Lucas bore guide and Boretech cleaning rod and that combo works great. The Boretech Elimator solvent is also good, as well as Wipeout and Patchout products. I believe that you can find the rods and brushes at Midway and other online dealers. The Lucas bore guide can be purchased directly from Lucas at the following address.

the kit said it was for 22 cal should I use a 17?? I just e-mailed about the bore guide. I am not going to use the rifle again until I get a good cleaning set up

you need a .20 cal cleaning kit. a .22 kit will not work. they are different.
.204 = 20 cal. not .22 good luck =)

im actually surpised you managed to get it into your barrel at all! good job on that!
anyway i doubt you would have damaged your barrel, just reframe from doing it again =p

will do. I found some cleaning kits for the .204 I am going to pick one up tomorrow. I will wait for my bore guide to clean it though

I use a Dewey cleaning rod and a Lucas Bore guide. Dewey makes caliber specific cleaning rods and Mike Lucas fits his inserts to the cleaning rod diameter. This combination gives me the best insurance from damaging my bore with improper cleaning techniques and equipment. You will need to make sure you have a cleaning rod long enough to clear the end of the barrel with the bore guide in place. I use a 38 inch cleaning rod with a 26 inch barrel and guide.

Dewey also makes a "No Harm" 20 caliber brass brush. Buy about a dozen of them. They will reverse in the bore.

I talked to Mike this morning and ordered bore guides for a few of my rifles. I like the dewey rods, I may order them today. I wonder if Bass pro or Gander mountain would have them in stock

thanks...I was surprised to see them in stock at my local gun shop so I picked them up today. One for each of my rifles and the correct size brushes and jags

I use the otis cleaning kit.a good bore cleaner such as kleen bore and a conditioner usualy break free. I prefer pulling the brush and patches from breach to bore.Way faster then removing the brush tip every time.I have been using the 22 call brush myself with good results.The cable allows me to pull a very tight patch through that i couldnt do with a rod.Cleaner gun less time cleaning got to love that.
