What barrel twist ?

Post by Yotecallr »

What is the best barrel twist for the different bullet weights ? I'm buying a Lothar Walther barrel as soon as they are available but don't know the best twist. This would be for calling in coyotes. Thank in advance.
Only accurate rifles are interesting....

This link has some info on twist rates for various calibers. It looks like for the .204, 1 in 12 works until you get to 50 gr or more, then they recommend 1 in 9.

The nominal rate is 1-12" like most factory barrels claim to be. That said, if you read around this forum, you'll find a LOT of rifles that won't handle the 40s well, some, not well at all. IF I were to buy a custom barrel, and didn't plan on shooting 50s, I'd go with the slowest twist that WOULD stabilize 40s, which is probably 1-11". That would let me shoot the 40s comfortably, without worrying about whether or not they'd stabilize. If I wanted to use the 50s, I'd go with a 1-9" (or .223!!!).

My Savage has a 22" 1:12 twist and shoots the 40g Vmax by Fiocchi just fine. I can knock off a yote at 350-400 yards no problem. And yes I am comfortable shooting at that range with the .204. The projectile stabilizes and does it's job. I have never had a problem. I would say 1:12 or 1:11.

My Thompson Center has a 1:10 twist and doesn't seem to like Nosler or Hornady 32 grain bullets. Same for the 40's. It does like Sierra BK's in 32 and 39. Haven't shot enough 35 gr Bergers to tell if it will like them or not. Not sure if it's the twist rate or this rifle just doesn't like boattail bullets (30 SBK has slight boattail).
