Does anyone here have experience with fixed power scopes on varmint rifles? I just bought a Savage LRPV in 6BR with the intention of shooting sage rats with it at 400-600yd. Obviously I'll need a lot of magnification (and a lot of practice). I was mentally debating how to scope it and the possibility of a fixed 24X occurred to me. Any opinions? I use a 6.5-20X on the 204 and I have nothing but praise for it, but out past 400yd the rats look mighty small even on 20-power.

Years ago, some of us shot target and varmints with the high end fixed scopes and they worked very well, for that. However I found, as others, that we limited ourselves to just that use. I much prefer the variable's now days, so I can work close or long with power/magnification adjusted, for the occasion. The do make some good varible scopes from around 6x up. I would really look into some of those, myself. Just a thought. Bill K

For hunting, variable is the way to go. Conditions change, range changes, light changes, variable power is ideal to cope with these things. Good luck and read alot of reviews/forums. Let us know what you get, cause my next gun will be a 6mmBR too!

Truth be told, I'm probably kidding myself that I'd never shoot this rifle at anything under 400yd.

Maybe it is just me, but I would think it might be hard to find your target with the small field of view you will have. In the prairies we shoot, there often isn't much to use to "relocate" the target you just found scanning with the binocs. I am always turning the power down to locate and then back up for the shot. Maybe out past 400 yards the field of view will be big enough that won't be an issue for you. I am usually shooting the 400 and in targets.
