Odawgpw/204--Congratulations!!! Nice looking coyote. It won't be long and those coyote hides will be primed up. Give us some more details on your setup, what call sounds you used, distance of the shot. Is the blood spot on the right side of the chest the entrance hole? If so, what was the exit hole like, if any? Thanks.

That is one beautiful background in your photo. Absolutely great looking country.

This coyote was taken on my second stand the first stand produced nothing. I took the shelf road from Camp where the picture was taken, up and around the knoll to about 300yds from where the road split parked the ATV and hiked to the "Y". Where I had planned my second stand See Link

The small valley where the road "Y's" had a bunch of buck brush in the bottom of it and a cow trail running perpendicular to the main road. I set the FX3 and decoy in the brush About 50yds off the road and 20 yds off the cow trial I took a hillside seat about 30yds from my caller looking North up the big canyon to my right

The plan was to call something out of the canyon or down the switch back road, It took 3-4 mins for me to get set

I started out will Bill Austin Ki Yi's I let the FX3 run for 10-15 seconds and muted it when there was a pause in the ki yi's waited for any response 30-60 sec and repeated this three times. I got no response, I looked down to get the next sound sent to the FX3 when I located it I looked out towards the call I saw this coyote trotting through the buck brush about 50yds out on the cow trail. She stopped and starred at the feather decoy hanging in the brush. I guess because there was no sound she disregarded the decoy and continued on. She passed into the brush to where I couldn't see her I picked a clearing I though she would walk into and when she did WHAM! The shot was 50-60 yds broadside slightly quartering away . the blood spot is the entrance wound (20 cal size). No exit wound
Image
The whole thing took about 5mins total , the way she looked at the decoy makes me think she came in to the call but the speed of the whole event makes me wonder if I was just in the right place at the right time.

Odawgpw/204--Thanks for the nice detail on your setup and the scene as it played out. I would suggest that you might want to remove the coordinates of your hunting spot unless you want a herd of hunters in one of your honey holes.

Congratulations on taking a fine looking animal. I have an Encore also in .204 that wont stabilize the Hornady 40gr. bullet. I guess I will have to try your 40 gr. Berger load that youre using to see if it will stabilize for me. Im surprized that the bullet did not exit? Do you think it hit the opposite shoulder blade, you said it was a quartering shot? The mountains sure make for a great background shot. Been thinking about buying a Foxpro FX-3 for this winter. Terrific post.

Too late

Open day of first season is Saturday already 6 out fits parked at my campsite icon all from out of state

it will be that way until November sometime then the 8ft of snow and -20 deg temps will keep most of them out of here

anyways that wasn't the honey hole only god and myself know about that place

Thanks I will keep that in mind for future posts
