One of these days, I will remember to bring a scale.....

I wear a size 12 1/2 shoe. 374 yards with a 52 gr Nosler HPBT over 27.4 gr of Benchmark with a CCI450 primer.

Image

Taken with this rifle (just built - Savage short action, accutrigger, repeater, factory savage stainless/fluted barrel, chambered in 223 AI, Boyds thumbhole laminated stock)

With the gore from a Nosler 52 gr HPBT...

...from a little ways away (full size white pickup)....

....and a near twin with a cool picture backdrop (I know, the scope rings are WAAAAY too high). Savage single shot, long action, VLP stock, and factory Savage barrel rechambered in 223 AI.

 acloco.......Way to go!! Nice 12-1/2 dog you got there.
Thanks for sharing the report with pics. Glade to see your irons are shooting straight and true. Don't worry about the hi scope mount, its looks great! Glade you connected. I haven't got out hog hunting yet, been wet here in Pa. I see your getting your share of storms too. Be safe and thanks for sharing.

Ray P - no kidding on the storms. The field grass is ALL of three feet or higher. Has definitely been a wet AND tornado filled year. Tornados touched down west of here 40 miles and north of here 40 miles.

This has been my first real "field" trip of any significance, due to the weather. Left the house at 5 pm and returned by 9 pm.

I'm surprised there weren't a bunch of little ones scampering out of that one...It looks like it was carrying a litter in the first pic...

acloco: Good thing you popped that boy at longish range. You'd have needed a .458 Win Mag if he had charged! That's one big boy for sure! I thought the world felt just a bit lighter recently.........

I should call one of the local taxidermists and ask how much to mount one of these.

Of course, if I brought an cooler with ice and a tripled thick plastic bag, I would never find another one. (murphy's law would DEFINITELY come into play)

PD shooting is like an ying v. yang thing for me. I don't particulary like the 90 degree temps and 90% humidity, but, if you are going to shoot SUN dogs, then that is the atmospher.

I would probably be whining about cold temperature if we were all taking shots at SNOW dogs......

acloco: Your 'whining' are some of the reasons we don't go after PD's much anymore, preferring to stay home in much more mild temps and shoot ground squirrels. More shooting, much more stupid targets, milder temps, MUCH less wind, and much, much closer to home.

It seems to work out much better for everyone, including the prairie dogs. Of course, Skippy the squirrel may see this differently.

My taxidermist wanted $150 to mount my 16 lb. rock chuck, a PD would cost about the same I'd think, especially one the size of Brutus there.

 That's why we carry side arms! If that big sucker had rushed your position your trusty pistol would have been the only thing to save you! Man I love this stuff!!! Gary
