I'd take a hard look at the Ruger Hawkeye, the latest 77 version, it's light enough, and a solid value. That, or the equally solid Savage. New Winchesters won't be available for awhile, Remington has their Model Seven, which isn't a bad rifle, either, and makes more sense than the 700, if you want to keep the weight down.
If you're not opposed to imports, Howa makes a good rifle, along with CZ, but they are heavier than you seem to be after.
The only thing I don't like about the Ruger is the little tiny safety button, it's not easy to take off when you're wearing gloves. They should have re-designed that button and made a larger tab for it.

My pick was a Kimber Montana. More money, but worth it......In EVERY way. Mine (260 rem)runs 6 lbs. all up with talley lw's and a leup compact 3x9. My wife uses a ruger ultralite in 7/08 that is 20 in barrel, target-grey. It runs slightly heavier than the kimber, and sports a lighter contoured barrel. The real difference between the two, are the stocks. The kimber has a real stock, instead of a blowmolded piece of plastic. CRF and weight/feel were the reasons for both choices. Here's a pic of the barrel size diff., ruger on right.

Both rifles after painting the stocks.Kimber on bottom....

I like both, but the montana is so light and well ballanced AND shoots so well. 3 rds at 102 yds.

How far will you be shooting?

I just restocked a recent purchase of mine. 1953 Remington Model 721 in 30/06. Shot a 2 7/8" group at 700 yards....with 165 Nosler BT over 45 grains of H4895.

Can you get any match '06 brass?

If so...send me an email please.

Winchester Featherweight Classic and Remington Mountain Rifle would both be good choices. I've used both of them (in 270) and been pleased with accuracy, portability and good looks.

GTR, Talo commissioned the target-grey ultra lites in 7/08 for Whitetails Unlimited. Some wholesalers may still have some. Mine was from a previous uncataloged run of 500. Ruger has done at least 3 runs of the T-G ultralites that I know of. Mine may have come from Davidsons.... Keen little rifles. Longer barrel and length of pull than the compacts. Don
