Rancher takes Silverfox on a guided tour of new groun--1-11-

Post by Silverfox »

I posted some photos of some new land I scouted last Sunday and told about having a little trouble finding a trail the rancher told me I should use to get up to the top of the land so I could travel north on the property and call coyotes. Well, he met me down at the south end of the property and took me for a ride around the property. He showed me what trails to use to get to various parts of his land, pointed out spots to avoid because of washouts, etc., and really gave me a grand tour.

We received about an inch of snow which started falling late Thursday night and continued to fall up through about noon hour. The land really looks different than it did in my photos from last Sunday. There was some mighty slippery hinking in a few places I walked. Here's a couple photos of one of the spots I set up and called in after the rancher dropped me off at my pickup.

The slight bit of wind that was blowing was coming out of the northeast. I set up under a juniper tree and had my FX5 sitting on my tripod about 50 yards to the NNW of my stand. Here's a wide angle view from my position.

This photo is from the same location, but I zoomed in a little bit and got the barrel and part of my scope in the photo.

Here's a look at what I saw when looking to the ENE of my stand:

I did call in six magpies and got a little excited when they came flying by, but they didn't seem to have any coyote companions with them. The pavement I drove on had some real icy patches on it and I wanted to head back home in the daylight, so I headed back for home after two stands. It was white knuckle driving in some spots and I was happy to be back home for supper.

Silverfox,

You have some awesome country out there to hunt. Did you know that I am your long lost son and willing to come home for a visit? I even have my own gun and ammo.
Enjoy it while you have it, because things will change.

Melvin & Glen--you two are some real jokers. You know, if I wasn't on such an extremely low fixed income with no weekly allowance from my wife, I might adopt both of you Image

Got any pets Silverfox? It sounds like you need a couple of new vets in that area ;)

Seriously though, nice looking country out there! All we have is muddy flat cropland around Champaign right now. :wall:

Hey Silver
Looks like you guys have snow north of the river. Hope we can get a little of the white stuff south of the lake this week. Have to test this new 204 on coyotes. I suppose with all the BIG cats around you have to have a good back stop too. Don't want to wind up kitty food.

Peadiddy--You mention you are south of the lake. Where might that be?

We didn't get much snow, but it made it a little easier to see coyotes if and when they come in. I was up NE of Williston yesterday afternoon and they had quite a bit more snow up there than we have around Williston. It is still pretty brown looking where there is CRP, etc., but white camo works OK now.

Hello Silver
I am down in Beulah. Coyotes are getting scarce around here. Mange has been bad for a few years now and is taking its toll. Fox are coming back a little.
