6x47 for Coyote?
6x47 for Coyote?
I was having one built for predators. That gunsmith said that in his opinion it was the best all around predator caliber period. He says it is very low recoil, easy and cheap to load for, shoots relatively large bullets at decent speeds, is fur friendly, can be used for small to medium deer at ranges 200 yards and less, has a very long barrel life, and is extremely accurate.
I had a major problem with the smith so I am taking my business elsewhere but don't know if I should stick with the caliber since he is the one who got me on it to begin with. Any thoughts on this caliber for coyotes and bobcats?

6x47
Sounds good. Go for it! Or you could just shoot a .243 I have one with a 18 inch heavy barrel that I have used for years with a 6x18 scope if you would like to buy it. Its all dialed in glass bedded nice trigger shoots tight groups. I know the 6x47 would work good but so will the .243 it is also cheap to reload.

Really good round. I've got one on a Rem action (modded to allow longer than 223 length rounds in the magazine), fluted #5 barrel, HS stock and Canjar trigger. I normally shoot the 70 gr Sierra BK at about 3100 fps, using about 28 gr of powder. The 87 Vmax can be pushed up to about 2800 fps, and the light bullets to about 3300 fps.
It's easily my favourite hunting rifle (and there's plenty of alternatives in the safe). It goes way further than you'd expect, and has plenty of punch when it gets there.

I had a 6x45 built for my main calling gun and think it is about perfect. 55gr NBT at 3350fps. It is a very easy cartridge to work with. If you want to stay with a small bolt face but want a little more UMPH, think about a 6mmx204 Ruger. It would equate to a 6x47mmAI with out the fire forming and brass is everywhere.. I built a 25x204 and it's a great little deer round, but a little heavy handed for coyotes (I save fur). I'll find the right combo for it though. If you decide to bulid a small boltface 6mm I wouldn't go any slower than a 1-10 twist it will work well with all but the over 100gr VLD bullets.
Sorry about your troubles with the smith , I had Pac-Nor install the 6x45 barrel on my Rem 600 and build the 25-204 barrel for me and they did nice work.
Good luck

Erich 6mm/204? Haven't heard about this can you elaborate on it?
I have talked to several more smiths since this started and they have advised me not to shy away from the 6x47 for brass reasons anyway. They say I will wear out the barrel before brass becomes an issue. That says a lot because this caliber is very barrel friendly.
I am looking at a Krieger #4 22" S/S barrel, Stiller Precision Predator action,Timney trigger, Boyd's Ross Thumbhole laminate in Desert Camo and a Nightforce 3.5-15x50 illum. scope with NF rings.

The 6mmx204 does not exist at this time that I know of, but neither did my 25-204. It is a very logical wildcat, and easy to build.
The 204 Ruger case is the 222 Rem Mag with the shoulder moved forward, the body straightenned , the shoulder changed to 30 degrees. BINGO improved 222 Rem Mag. then they necked it to .20 cal. Open it up to 6mm and you have a 6mmx47 IMP with no fire forming and a selection of brass from ALL makers that is at least $8.00/100 cheaper.
Chamberring should be a piece of cake also. Cut the chamber with a 204 Ruger reamer with a 6mm pilot and finish the neck and throat with the 6x47 reamer.
Load data is almost there, start with 6x47 data and work up.
I like Hornady dies and they will build you a custom 2 die set for $108. Another $50 will get you a custom Lee collet die.
This will not fit a CZ action, as bullets need to be seated out much farther than the parent 204.
PM me if I can be more help.

Why go through the hassle? 243 has cheaper brass and the same bullets.

If your starting with a small bolt face action it will cost alot to change it. The 6mmx204 uses less powder to do the samething. You lose the COOL factor. A small boltface 6 seams easier to get to shoot small groups (243's never made it as a benchrest cartridge).
