Does anyone know how the population of Prairie Dogs is doing around
Watford City, ND. I read that they were planning to poison that area last year, but apparently decided not to.

Try a pm to Silverfox, I bet he could shed some light. I don't get that far east very often, haven't shot in N.D. for a few years.

HEE, HEE "I don't get that far east very often"

I don't know why, but that struck me funny! My mom was born North of Miles City, Montanna. Her birthday was yesterday and she was 88 years young. ;)

Hope your Mom had a happy day. I would have to drive by a lot of dog towns to get to N.D.

Tell your mom HI from another person born in Miles City. :)

...sorry, but not everybody can be from Montana!

WT--I have not received any PMs from you. However, I will try to answer your question about PDs around Watford City as best I can. There are not very many PDs right around Watford City. The only ones I can think of within 5 miles or so of Watford City are right south of the golf course on the east side of the city. Now, if you go further SW out of Watford City, say 15 miles or so, you will run into some healthy populations of PDs.

I believe the PDs they were going to poison might have been on land adjacent to private land. They would have poisoned to help keep the population from spreading onto the private land. At least that was my understanding of the program.

Personally, I go west, into Montana once each summer for about 3 days of prairie dog shooting. The rest of the time I utilize the PD towns in Western and Southwestern ND.

Silverfox,
Thank you for the reply. We have been shooting Prairie Dogs around the Belfield and Medora area. In the past we've talked about checking the area around Watford City and Grassy Butte. If we do some scouting North and West of Grassy Butte, that should put us in the area you mentioned. Thanks for the tip!

WT--Make sure you don't try to hunt prairie dogs in the North Unit of the Teddy Roosevelt Park

There are some dog towns to the NW of the park. Some are on private land and some are on National Grasslands. There are one or two dog towns a mile or two north of the north portion of the North Unit of the TR Park.

I don't know of any dog towns north of Grassy Butte between Grassy Butte and the Little Missouri River. Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't any out there, I just don't know where they would be. I think you would have better luck finding dog towns on the west side of the Little Missouri. Contact the Dickinson, ND Convention and Visitor's Bureau and they'll send out some information to you on prairie dog towns on private land, etc.

Thanks for the tips! I fired off an email to the Dickinson CVB requesting info.
