The Idaho Varmint Hunters just had their annual Christmas Song Dog Challenge tournament this past Saturday. It's a one day contest. Five teams registered and three teams brought coyotes back. First place had three, 2nd place had two and third place had two. The tie was broken with the biggest dog which was a 38 lb. male. So, I guess there a few coyotes out there somewhere.

Skipper: If it was not so darn far away and I were younger I sure would. Have not been into Tx since about 1997. All over the El Paso area and into Mexico at that time. Now days don't know if I would want too. Bill K

I'm a little late to this, but here goes. I spent 6 days in the Elko are at the end of Sept 2019 and it was different from the year before. The sage flats that were teaming with rabbits were almost baron and where we had multiple coyote responses(killed a couple triples) the year before we couldn't call a coyote. We had to get into different ground, heavier cover and grass. We ended up killing 10 in 6 days and called about 5 more that we missed or didn't shoot at. We only hunted until noon each day. We were testing guns and killed them with a 22 Hornet, 218 Bee, 22-250, 243 and 6.5x58R Sauer/16ga/16ga drilling. I left the 222 Rem and 22-204R home this year

At least you're getting out and shooting a few. They're still out there but it seems like you have to work harder to get them. There's so many people here calling and shooting them that I think they've become a lot more nocturnal. They're pretty suspicious of a rabbit distress in day light.

Took a little venture into one of my alfalfa pivot areas, after double checking the creed's zero, for pending hunting season. Three coyotes out in the field, two never made it out. The third was in high gear, so maybe another day on it. Bill K ( two young males, maybe one or two years old)

I had been up to one of the rifle ranges checking the zero on my creed and drove into one of my alfalfa pivots field area and they were out in one of them, looking for ground squirrels I would guess, around 3pm. first one at around 140 and the second around 200 yrds. So I guess you could say they wre volunteers. Bill K

Good job. I'm going to try to get out in a few days and see if I can scare one up. Gotta shoot doves tomorrow.

Been getting some, changing up my calls ( using Fox pup distress, coin fight, etc.) but noticing I have to stay on stands 35-45 minutes before they come in.

Local trapper back home by the farm (deer hunting ground) has me out of business as for as calling goes. I'm acctually glad he's running that line, I'd rather have him taking care of them in his own way so he can dispatch them how it benefits him as far as pelts go.
Kinda fun to get up that close my son was with and got to see one up close and still upright and not covered in blood.

Saw this good looking pale opening weekend of deer season. 3 miles away he had another one in a trap where my cousin was scraping out field ditches.
