Kansas Prairie Dogs

Post by giterdone »

This year we are heading for Kansas to shoot Prairie Dogs and maybe a Coyote or two. We will be shooting the third week of May. Maybe if any of the forum members are going to be in Kansas that week we could meet in Syracuse. If you have shot there before P.M. me.

I went out there in Kansas five years ago from SC and shot 1300 Pdogs with my brother with 17 HMR and a few with 223. We went in late July... it was a little hot.. but young dogs were everywhere. I liked having more targets later on in the year.

Thanks for the reply. We want to go early enough to beat the heat but I am bringing an E-Z Up shelter. Im also going to bring two or three .204's (lots of ammo) and a .17HMR for the close ones (200yds. and under) but will stick with the .204's (39gr. Sierra BlitzKings) for the remainder of available targets. My friend has only one rifle, a .22-250 so he's going to use that. I advised him that he will probably overheat the barrel but he doesent want to buy another rifle at this time. IMHO you have to bring enough rifles to allow one's barrel to cool off by switching to another rifle. Im going to leave my .22-250 and both my .223's home this trip. Last year while Prairie Dog and ground squirrel shooting in Wyoming, everything I shot at was out of range for my .223 with the loads I was using, so I put the .223 away and shot one of my .204's the rest of the shoot. A bad day hunting is better than a good day at work!

I hunted in Syracuse on the third week of May last year. First day was great with minimal wind (about 5mph). After that, wind picked up a little bit but was not too bad. Weather was nice, not too hot and sunny all day. We did not have a canopy or anything covering for shade but that was not a problem. I will be there the second week of June this year. Can't wait.

Then there's Montana Prairie dogs:

Even the 6.5-08 and the SN-3 6-30x58, with the 100 grain SVHP, ran out of gas at about 700 yards. Of course anything more local than that was simply mortified!

Just shot over there on Easter Sunday. There is a spot I found in KS this last weekend that is amazing. Must be 3000 acres of solid pds and no shooters.
