Temporary snow camo for my 204.

Post by BabaOriley »

I'm probably not done with this yet, but spent about an hour last night trying to make this rifle blend into a snow covered environment. I like the results so far and thought I better share in case someone here may be interested in trying it. I don't know where I read about this first, but i didn't come up with it.

3m makes a product called Vetrap© Bandaging Tape. It's intended purpose is to bandage the legs of farm animals, mainly horses. It doesn't have any sticky side, so when removed, you'll have no sticky residue to scrub off. It just feels like a sort of rubbery, stretchy fabric that bonds to itself. I chose to reinforce the ends of my wrap job with some white 3M 35 electrical tape, which comes off cleanly from hard surfaces. It comes in a bunch of colors, and costs about $2.50 per roll when purchased in a case of 18 rolls. I opted for a generic alternative found here, which is what you see in these pics, and costs less than $1/roll. Usually with electrical tape and things made by 3m, the generic can't compare with the real thing, but the generic bandage stuff works fine. It takes less than 3 rolls to do a rifle. You may get by with 2 if only wrapping one layer. I put 2 layers of this on a bolt action last winter and it held up well.

I cut pieces of the white electrical tape to put in places where the wrap wouldn't work, and could keep going, but figured the bulk of the black color is now broken up. The matte stainless barrel should be ok. I thought about wrapping the barrel too, and hope I never get it hot enough to melt the Vetrap to it, but figured it wasn't necessary. If any of you have some more ideas for an easy cleanup TEMPORARY snow camo treatment let us know!

That is one large scope you have mounted to that rifle. Hey don't be afraid to tape the barrel. Nice rig. The Krylon camo paint comes off real easy with gun scrub. It will wipe off the barrel easy when the season is over.
