Some 2009 big game success

Has been a busy season chasing critters with stick and string. Was a very successful season and had to go out and buy another freezer.

I called this elk in on Sept 12 for a buddy of mine for a nice 10 yd shot.

Next was my moose on Sept 27. I was calling this fella in for my buddy Ron to shoot but as you know, things don't always work out to plan. Ron did not have a shot so I took him out instead. After the 35 yd shot he bolted and ran behind Ron. I started cow calling again and he stopped and turned and started grunting hard again. Ron thought he could hear him taking a leak but it was actually blood that was pouring out of him. He turned and ran and piled up. He covered about 70 yds from where I hit him before he piled up.

The next one is Ron's moose. Calling had slowed down and we were getting ready to try for an evening session when we bumped this fella. He was about 20 yds off of the trail and spooked and ran further into the bush. I cow called him back out onto the line and Ron also had a 35 yd shot. At the shot he bolted back into the bush but only made it about 50 yds and we watched him pile up.

My buddy, Doug was tree stand hunting for deer on Oct 26 when this fella gave him the opportunity to slide an arrow through the vitals. This one was also another 35 yd shot. He ran about 80 yds and piled up. He was easy to pack out as I was able to drive my quad right up to him.

Yeah, I guess I take moose hunting for granted out here. Lots of opportunities especially with stick and string. No draw (in most zones), just a general tag every year. The rifle hunters have to wait on a draw system for most zones that can take up to 3 or 4 years (works on a priority system).
I've taken about 15 or so moose since I took up the bow back in 86. Most shots are under 20 yds (closest was 3 ft). It sure can get the adrenaline going when you get them all fired up with calling and they come in like a freight train grunting and smashing trees.
90% of the time I do all of the calling and let the guys in the group do the shooting, but sometimes things don't go according to plan and I end up taking the shot. I've captured a few of our shots on video and am hoping to transfer them to the computer (winter project).

Nice story and a fine hunt. At 35 yds away that has to be an impressive sight.

Thanks for sharing...
