My sons first elk hunt starts Sat.

Post by skb2706 »

I have the truck ready to go, son is ready to go and all I have to do now is get thru the day. I am taking/guiding my son on his first ever elk hunt for the next week. We will be hunting the Sangre De Cristo Mtns. Range in southern CO and there is no more beautiful place on earth. Our mission is to get his elk, our goal is to be there for the experience.
I am cranked and I know he is.............I'm not hunting elk this year as i didn't get drawn but its really all for the better. We already got two antelope, I really think in another month we will get two deer and to be honest I don't know where we would put all the meat. I may donate some this year anyway.
Good luck to all the other guys heading out, be safe and smart.

Son scored Sunday morning on a very large cow elk in what turned out to be a fantastic weekend for us. We had a game plan for Saturday morning that was good but put us on the wrong side of the wind and sunrise. Sunday morning we made corrections for that and he got her right at sunrise. She would go over 500 lb. live weight and went into the processor at 260 lbs.
He shot her with the .300 Win Mag, 180 gr. Sierra GK, Remington Sendero at 280 yds. Two shots, first one would have ultimately dropped her but I made him shoot til she fell. I will post a pic or two..........

PS on Saturday morning we were pinned down not able to move undetected by a herd of 200 plus elk. The noises and movements they make in mass like that are incredible.

Congrat's to your son! I take it he didn"t get the scope too close again. He just just needs to get his deer and will have a freezer Grand Slam! :D

Lyle - I already solicited the family for extra freezer space. At the processors (Steves Meats) ready to cut his elk was 260 lbs. My freezer isn't going to handle that with the two existing antelope.

I will post pics I just need to shrink them down a bit for Hunt 101.

My son lucked right into a very nice collection of guns. Several years back our home was burglarized, they took lots of guns but we had full replacement insurance. He was young but I had the opportunity to purchase a nice battery for him to grow into. His small collection will cover anything we hunt here in the lower 48. We shoot lots of pds, he has a couple of very nice varmint rifles, we shoot deer/antelope at his aunts farm and he has a couple of choices for that, a good shotgun and he is set. We switch back and forth alot......he likes more power, I like less weight so slowly he is taking over mine and I am taking back his.
