2008 Whitetail 5x5

Post by acloco »

Results of the 2008 Hunt.

One shot, 303 yards, from a Remington 721 in 30/06 using 178 gr HPBT.

The 30/06 is the synthetic stock rifle. Behind it is a Savage Target action I built for my shooting buddy in 338 RUM.

The plan - wanted to shoot a deer at 700 to 1200 yards with the 338 RUM. This deer ranged at 706 yards. I missed, three times. 1st shot was high, second was high, and 3rd was 6" high. Deer ran TOWARDS us and stopped at 303 yards, because he did not see us. Laid down the 338 RUM because I was out of scope (top line of the mildot was set at 700 yards, so, I had no way to aim above the top line). Pulled out the 30/06 and dropped the buck.

Last time that I hunted deer was 26 years ago...too long. We had a LOT of fun.

That's a dandy buck you've got there! My count has begun to the Illinois Firearm season, I'll be headed out Thursday night to the cabin where I'll probably get as much sleep as a 5 year old on Christmas Eve!

I'll be trying my hand at taking one with a pistol again this year, last year I had the pistol with me but didn't get a shot with it.

That is my scruffy "the wind will be cold" unshaven look. Probably take it off tonight and deal with the cold. We had been experiencing 15-35 mph winds the last couple of weeks leading up to the the beginning of rifle season.

There is a saying.....

"Don't whine about the wind in Nebraska, we just call it Tuesday!"

I've got the same look going on! There is only one thing this is consistent with weather here in Illinois, it's going to be windy!

I fully expect it to be breezy and nasty before the season is over. However this weekend is looking pretty calm with temps in the lower 40's during the day and 20's and 30's at night.

So why the 26 year wait? I have a hard time waiting 26 hours to hunt!

Between getting married, raising 3 kids, working, going back to college, new job, moves, etc, etc....just never had time or place to hunt (I don't live in Montana anymore...).

So, this year, the opportunity presented itself and I was ready.

Thanks Guy M - I like your Muley as well.

Nice buck. What area were you hunting. I hunted the missouri area growing up. Had some real monsters there at one time. Before the leased hunting era.

Mid/western side of Nebraska.

Not a monster, but the double brow tines are kind of cool.
