So my dad told me yesterday that he was ready to buy a decent set of binoculars. I guess the pile of junk ones he has stashed away finally got big enough for him to notice . He wants to spend around $250 wich isn't a ton for good glass. So any suggestions? I could probably talk him into spending more if quality is at stake. Help appreciated.

what power? I love the 10X32 Leopold Windriver Pinacle series for deer hunting etc.

Check out the latest Outdoor Life mag. They have some "best buys" in there.

I picked up a pair of Leupold 7/12 (switch power) bino's just before Christmas. They're higher than the price range you indicated but IMO, they are well wort it. It's like having 2-pair or binoculars at your finger tips. There was some on SWFA the other day on their Sample List.

Jim- The switch powers look pretty sweet. Reading the reviews, some people don't like the eyecups and say you have to hold the binos away from your face to use them. Have you had this problem?

Neil - I've used my Lupy S/P's (7-12X) since they first came out. They use eyecups that can be used when wearing glasses or without; you twist them up/out for naked eye viewing, or leave them down/in for eyeglass use.

If you don't wear glasses and don't twist the eye cups up and out, you'll experience what you describe above. The individuals that posted that must be the ones who never read instructions and most likely lacking in common sense.

I use my S/P's for both bench varmint shooting, coyotes and big game hunting, and find them the perfect size and weight for packing all day with great field of view on 7X, and the ability to zip to 12X for more detailed viewing. Brightness and clarity are typical Leupold.

Thanks Rick, he really wants to go with leupold but I warned him that the Green Ring products are not really made by leupold. Personally I think he should go with these!

Rick beat me to the keyboard, but no, mine work just as Rick described. There is a pair over on SWFA now and again, a tad more but worth every penny IMO.

Just an update. My dad loved the leupold switchpowers but couldn't quite get over the price. He ended up ordering the Nikon Monarch 10x binos.
