Scope for my Remmy 788.

I have a Remington 788 .223 that needs a scope upgrade. Right now it has an older Bushnell 3x9 that has worked well, but a friend invited me to go with him to shoot some squirrels this spring so I want a scope with more magnification.

Not wanting to spend mega $$$ because it will still be a jackrabbit/yote rifle for the most part, I was looking at the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 Mildot. Those who have them seem to like them. I also looked at the Leupy VX-II's, but a friend told me not to spend the extra money for a Leupy unless you are going to buy a VX-III.

Any thoughts?

Also, the guy at the shop couldn't quite explain to me how the mildots worked. I know that they are for different yardages, but is it set up where you can adjust each one to the different yardages?

do yourself a favor and go ahead and get the leupold VXll. the new VXll's are the same scope as the older VXlll's. i have the VXll on two of my varmint rifles a 223 and a 204. both are 6-18x40 scopes. if you go to the leupold web page you will find an answer to your questions on the mil dots. as far as where each dot is zeroed at, that depends on a whole lot of things, such as velocity, bullet weight, bullet coefficient, where you zero the scope, and some stuff that i am missing. but you can customize your scope on the leupold site, for whatever cartridge you will be shooting, but you need to know some of the things i mentioned earlier. on my 204, i customized the scope for the bullets that i shoot the most, but you will need to go and shoot some to see where your dots are zeroed. or if you know and understand a whole lot more math than i know, you can figure your zero for each dot. (maybe!)

the answer to this question is a definate no. there is no adjustment on any one dot on any mil dot scope that i know of.

Shop carefully, Leupold is discontinuing the VXIII line, and they are being discounted by dealers everywhere. You might be able to find a VX3 for a great deal. I got a flier from Midsouth yesterday, and all the VX3s were priced to sell.
